The Shanghai List is an annual ranking of the best universities in the world. This year, nine Polish institutions were included in it, including two medical ones – the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice and the Medical University of Warsaw.
Nine of the best universities in Poland
Among the XNUMX best educational institutions there are: Jagiellonian University in Cracow (place 301-400), University of Warsaw (401-500), AGH University of Science and Technology Stanisław Staszic in Krakow (601-700), University of Adam Mickiewicz in Poznań (701-800), Warsaw Medical University (701-800), Warsaw University of Technology (801-900), Medical University of Silesia in Katowice (901-1000), University of Nicolaus Copernicus in Torun (901-1000) i Wroclaw University of Science and Technology (901-1000).
The Medical University of Silesia was also included in the ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2019 in the category of “clinical medicine”. Apart from SUM, the list also includes the Jagiellonian University, the Medical University of Gdańsk, the Medical University of Łódź, the Medical University of Wrocław and the Medical University of Warsaw.
There were 2018 Polish universities on the 12 Shanghai List. This year, the list does not include the Łódź University of Technology, the University of Łódź and the University of Wrocław.
How is the Shanghai List made?
The prestigious ranking has been published since 2003 by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Since 2009, the ranking has been carried out by the independent organization ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, which is not subject to any universities or government agencies. How points are awarded to specific universities? It is taken into account, inter alia, numerous alumni and employees winning the Nobel Prize, Fields Medals, the number of cited researchers, articles published in the journals “Nature” and “Science” or the overall performance of the university in relation to its size.
The original purpose of the ranking was to assess the global standing of Chinese universities, but the list was quickly met with great recognition and interest from universities, governments and the media around the world. One of the most important factors that influenced the popularity of the Shanghai List is the unchanging and transparent methodology.
