Liana and Leonie are twin sisters from Cologne. The crumbs are not even half a year old, but the whole world already knows them. In the west, they were nicknamed “medical sensation.” After all, the babies were not even born on different days, but in different years!
Yes, it happens. The fact is that Oksana, the girls’ mother, was admitted to the hospital in her sixth month of pregnancy. The woman’s water suddenly broke. The cervix was open, the threat of premature birth, respectively, is extremely high. Therefore, the doctors made the only correct decision in this situation – to give birth urgently.
Liana was born on November 17, 2018, for a period of 26 weeks and 5 days. The girl weighed only 900 grams.
“But after the baby was born, the cervix just closed again,” the astonished doctors said on the clinic’s Facebook page. And once it is closed, then there is nothing to force the second baby to be born prematurely. After all, as the tests showed, the baby in the womb felt great.
As the head physician of the maternity ward, Uwe Schellenberger, later said, the woman had two placentas. Its own – for each girl. That is, strictly speaking, they are not twins, but twins. And this allowed the younger sister to remain in the mother’s womb and grow until the due date, while the older one was nursed at the perinatal center, and then at the children’s hospital.

“After the birth of the first child, the cervix closed very quickly and the painful contractions stopped,” says the doctor. “To make the pregnancy go on without complications, we supported it with anti-inflammatory drugs.”
As a result, Leonie was born only on February 22, 2019! I even “sat out” four extra days in my mother’s tummy. And she was born, by the way, with an excellent weight for a baby – 3 kilograms 700 grams. Doctors say that in world practice there have been cases when twins were born with a difference of several days. But a little over three months is a record! The hospital conducted its own research and found that a similar case in 2012 was in Ireland. But there the difference was 87 days, and here – as much as 97!
The girls are already at home. They weigh almost six kilograms each and develop well.
“Both girls are healthy, Oksana and Alexander are overjoyed,” the clinic says. – The older brother, 8-year-old Danila, is proud of such special twin sisters. And we are all glad that the birth of the second girl was postponed – not without the help of doctors and correctly selected medicines. “
