Tussidex for a dry cough. Composition, use, side effects

Tussidex is used for acute, dry cough not related to airway secretions. The drug contains a derivative of morphine – dextromethorphan, which has a central analgesic effect. After oral administration, the preparation starts working after about 15-30 minutes and lasts up to 5-6 hours. The preparation is in the form of soft capsules for oral administration and is available without a prescription.

Tussidex – indications and dosage

Tussidex is recommended in acute and dry cough that is not accompanied by secretion in the respiratory tract.

Drug dosage

Tussidex is a soft capsule to be taken by mouth. Do not exceed the recommended dose of the drug, as it may endanger your life or health.

  1. Adults and children over 12 years of age. Orally. 15-30 mg every 6-8 h, max. 120 mg / day.

Tussidex and contraindications

Contraindications to the use of Tussidex are:

  1. hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation,
  2. treatment with MAO inhibitors (in parallel or within the last 14 days),
  3. bronchial asthma,
  4. severe liver failure,
  5. respiratory failure or the risk of its occurrence,
  6. chronic cough
  7. emphysema,
  8. chronic bronchitis,
  9. the period of breastfeeding,
  10. use in children up to 12 years of age.

Tussidex – warnings

  1. A doctor should be consulted if the cough persists for more than 7 days and is associated with fever, headache or rash.
  2. Do not take Tussidex if you have a productive cough.
  3. It is recommended to check whether any other medicines taken contain dextromethorphan in order to avoid overdosing.
  4. It is not recommended to consume alcohol and other preparations containing alcohol during treatment with the preparation.
  5. The dose should be reduced and caution should be exercised in people with hepatic impairment.
  6. Patients with known intolerance to certain sugars should consult a doctor before taking the preparation because it contains sorbitol.
  7. Cochineal red and propylene glycol in the drug may cause allergic reactions.
  8. Pregnant women, especially in the third trimester, should not take the drug. They can use the preparation only after medical consultation and if the doctor decides that the benefit for the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus.
  9. It is contraindicated to use the drug during breastfeeding.
  10. Tussidex may cause drowsiness and dizziness, and impair the ability to drive motor vehicles and impair psychophysical fitness. People who perform activities that require concentration, such as: driving a car, operating machinery, working at high altitude, should exercise caution.

Tussidex with other medications

  1. Do not use Tussidex with MAOani inhibitors within 14 days of stopping them; taking contrary to the warnings may cause: increased blood pressure, high fever, collapse, coma, hallucinations, nausea.
  2. Taking the preparation with quinidine, amiodarone, fluoxetine may lead to an increase in the concentration of the preparation in the blood and intensify its side effects. If the patient uses the above-mentioned drugs, consult a physician before using the preparation.
  3. Taking Tussidex with other central nervous system depressants, e.g. sleeping pills, anxiolytics, sedatives, may increase the effects of these drugs on the central nervous system. Before using the above-mentioned drugs, a medical consultation is recommended during the application period.
  4. You should not consume alcohol during treatment with the drug.

Tussidex – side effects

During the treatment with Tussidex, side effects may occur, such as:

  1. somnolence,
  2. dizziness,
  3. confusion,
  4. constipation
  5. nausea,
  6. vomiting,
  7. stomach pains,
  8. allergic reactions such as rash, hives, angioedema,
  9. swelling of the face, lips, tongue, throat
  10. bronchospasm
  11. wheezing.
