Turmeric, present in most homes, is a real treasure. Studies have shown that the curcumin contained in it has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, stimulates the immune system, supports wound healing and fights bacteria. And the most important thing is that it is inexpensive and easily accessible. Moreover, recent advances in the formation of complexes of curcumin with other substances, especially with phospholipids, have significantly increased its bioavailability. It was a milestone in improving the absorption and high concentration of curcumin in the tissues. The possibility of using lower doses than in the past significantly reduces the number of tablets required to be taken, which facilitates therapy.
The acceptable daily intake of curcumin and turmeric, according to the recommendations of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), is 1 and 3 mg / kg bw, respectively.
A recent study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease confirmed reports of curcumin’s ability to fight Alzheimer’s disease. This compound has the property of reaching the brain and binding and destroying beta-amyloid plaque involved in the course of Alzheimer’s disease. The accumulation and aggregation of this plaque drives the irreversible loss of neurons.
To overcome the problems associated with administering the drug intravenously, researchers set out to develop a nebulizer to generate curcumin aerosol. In this way, the drug can be inhaled and delivered to the brain. Japanese scientists developed a molecule similar to curcumin, which proved to be convenient to use and inexpensive.
It turns out that curcumin, which is part of the popular spice, is a real treasure. Research on its numerous properties is still ongoing.
