Tunisian liqueur Tibarin: what is it, how to drink + 3 cocktail recipes

Briefly about the drink

Date liqueur Tibarine (Thibarine) is one of the few alcoholic business cards of Muslim Tunisia. This brown elixir has a rich fruity-herbal taste and a strength ranging from 40-45 degrees. It was created in 1895 by French Catholic missionaries: the White Fathers, who settled in the area of the Tunisian city of Tibar.

In view of the herbal component of the drink, it is often compared with Becherovka, Jägermeister and even Drambuie. However, such comparisons are completely groundless. The alcoholic base of the liquor is grape spirit, infused on local dates with the addition of water and honey. In addition, the composition of the drink includes numerous spices: anise, cumin, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, etc. Mediterranean herbs: tarragon, Greek fenugreek, mint, etc. give additional piquancy to Tibarin.

How to drink Tibarin

First of all, Tunisian liqueur is recommended to be used as a digestif. In this case, it is drunk from a liquor glass with the possible addition of an ice cube. Also on the Internet you can find tips on using this drink in the form of an aperitif; but we would not do this, in view of the rather palpable sweetness of the elixir, which can kill the appetite.

On the other hand, a few teaspoons of Tinbarin will serve as an excellent warming addition to tea or coffee.

In addition, the liquor we are interested in has proven itself in mixes that involve the use of citrus juice: orange, tangerine, grapefruit, lemon and even lime.

And finally, Tunisian bartenders adapted the aforementioned drink for making cocktails intended for European tourists. These cocktails include: “Soviva”, “Rose of Tunisia” and “Tindarin”.
