Tumors of the urinary tract are most often found as papillomas or bladder tumors, which in some cases may be located in the ureter or in the renal pelvis. They usually arise secretly and may develop asymptomatically for a long time. A symptom of concern is hematuria or stones in the bladder.
Symptoms of tumors of the urinary tract
A characteristic symptom that raises the suspicion of neoplastic changes is visible haematuria (which may also be inflamed), bladder papillomas or urolithiasis.
There are cases where pieces of the tumor or blood clots are excreted with the urine. Neoplasms that are present in the ureter or in the renal pelvis also cause pain experienced quite early, due to the obstructed outflow of urine by the growing tumor. Often, hydronephrosis or pyonephrosis may develop secondary. The production of pain and hydronephrosis is therefore very similar to that of a stone being trapped in the ureter.
Diagnosis of cancer of the urinary tract
The diagnosis of cancer is based on:
- periodically diagnosed haematuria,
- urographic examination,
- ultrasound examination,
- other specific studies.
Any hematuria visible to the naked eye should be consulted with a physician immediately so that the appropriate type of treatment can be administered depending on the cause.
Treatment of a tumor of the urinary tract
Treatment is largely based on surgery. However, in the initial stages of development, bladder papillomas may undergo transurethral resection or electrocoagulation. In order to be able to diagnose papilloma, regular visits to the urologist are necessary.
