Tulips before winter: how to plant

Tulips bloom in early spring. They are one of the first flowers to bloom after the winter cold. To prevent the plant from dying under the snow, it is important to choose the right time to plant.

The best time to plant tulips is early October. Planting is carried out into the ground to a depth of 10 cm. Its temperature is no higher than 10 degrees. The bulb takes root in the soil before winter. Its root system is actively growing and becoming stronger. This allows her to survive when temperatures fall below zero.

Tulips must be planted in the fall before winter.

The bulb will take 20 to 30 days to take root. Planting tulips before winter should not be carried out earlier than the end of September or later than November. Untimely landing leads to negative consequences:

  • early planting leads to early germination of flowers. Young plants are at risk of dying due to frosts, which are typical in early spring;
  • planting late will prevent the bulb from rooting well before it sinks into the ground. As a result, tulips will be small, inconspicuous and underdeveloped in spring.

You should not plant tulips in late autumn and early winter if a suitable planting date has been missed. Such plants will not bloom brightly and profusely or will die altogether.

How to plant tulip bulbs before winter

For the active growth of tulips, not only the planting time is important, but also the growing conditions. It is necessary to plant the bulb in a place where there are no strong drafts, and there is also good lighting. The soil should be light and loose with neutral acidity. Planting depth is 6 to 10 cm. It is determined by the size of the bulb. The larger the specimen, the more it should be deepened.

Before planting, the bulb is carefully examined. If the plant is stained and damaged, it is not suitable for growing.

Tulips can be grown in single and combined plantings. They can serve as a decoration for garden paths or be located as separate islands. You can group the flower beds according to the variety. This will make the plant easier to care for. To create flower arrangements, tulips are recommended to be combined with large spring flowers.

When growing tulips, the most important thing is to get the correct planting time. After that, they do not need complicated care. It is enough to mulch the soil to protect it from frost and water it if the soil is too dry. In spring tulips will decorate the garden with bright and fragrant flowers.
