Tropical liana palm

Tropical liana palm

Rattan palms are native to rainforests. This species is prized for its flexible liana-shaped stem. It belongs to the genus Calamus.

Rattan has a powerful stem with a small diameter. Usually it does not exceed 5 cm. Active growth allows it to reach a length of up to 300 m. Leaf petioles and internodes are also actively developing. Their length is about 2 m. Numerous pointed spines are formed on them. The central leaf vein grows, winding around the trees standing nearby. So she reaches the upper tier of the forest.

A tropical palm tree needs moist and warm growing conditions

The unpretentiousness and prevalence of rattan makes it possible to use it for economic purposes. The smooth and durable stem is used to make furniture. It consists of several layers:

  • bark – a solid structure serves as a protective shell that prevents damage to the plant;
  • the pulp has a soft, non-uniform texture;
  • the core is tough and durable.

The tropical palm has no branches on the stem. Its diameter is uniform along its entire length. Flexibility and the ability to bend allows the palm to flip from one tree to another. Elasticity makes it possible to adapt to any climatic changes.

Growing a tropical palm-liana

Rattan propagates by seed. Due to their hard shell, they need preliminary scarification. A small incision is made on the shell, after which the seeds are soaked in a preparation that stimulates growth. As a soil, you can choose a mixture of sphagnum and peat with the addition of sand. The palm tree does not like stagnant moisture, so it needs drainage. The seeds are deepened 2 cm into the ground and covered with a film. The container is placed in a warm place with a temperature of 25 degrees. Seedlings are formed for a long time, up to 1 year. When they get stronger, they are transplanted into a large pot or greenhouse. Rattan care involves:

  • Watering – the soil should not dry out. In the summer, watering is necessary weekly. In winter, it can be reduced to 2 times a month. In hot weather, the leaves should be sprayed regularly.
  • Lighting – a palm tree needs bright light and warmth. The root dies quickly in a cool room.
  • Top dressing is required during the period of active growth. It is best to use a fertilizer spray to spray the leaves.

Foliage forms slowly. The palm tree acquires a decorative appearance after 5 years. As it grows up, it must be transplanted into a larger pot.

Growing rattan will take a long time. Over the years, it reaches an impressive size.
