Trichomoniasis is a parasitic disease that infects humans through the sexual pathway. Trichomoniasis is a parasite usually located in the genitals and urinary organs of humans, mainly in the vagina in women and under the foreskin in men, and in the initial part of the urethra in both. Trichomoniasis is more common in women (30–70%), but it is not uncommon in men (10–20%), with some regional differences in its incidence.

What is trichomoniasis?

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted parasitic disease caused by trichomoniasis. Trichomoniasis is a protozoan from the group of flagellates and usually lives in the urogenital tract of humans. It is small in size and may be pear-shaped, spindle-shaped or round.

Trichomoniasis is more common in women than in men (about 70% of cases).

Trichomoniasis infection can occur during sexual intercourse, but also from the use of the same towel as the infected one or from using public toilets or saunas (less common). Also, bathing in the same water as an infected person can lead to the development of the disease. This ailment does not spare children, because there are cases of infection, most often due to neglect of hygiene by adults. Trichomoniasis can be acute or chronic.

Sources of trichomoniasis infection

Common and dangerous, as it is rarely suspected, source of infection are carriers, i.e. people infected with trichomoniasis, who therefore do not have any symptoms or ailments. Carriers, not suspecting that they are infected, do not perform any tests or undergo treatment. However, they are a potential source of infection for their sexual partners or roommates, in whom trichomoniasis may cause the overt form and the described ailments.

Check that you are not infected by performing a Dispatch test for intimate diseases – candidiasis, trichomoniasis and bacterial vaginosis. You can also buy this test in the Venereal Disease Test Kit along with the HIV test.

Symptoms of the acute form of trichomoniasis

1. In women, the following is usually observed:

  1. yellowish-greenish, often foamy and with an unpleasant odor of discharge,
  2. itching and burning in the vagina and the perineum,
  3. pain,
  4. itching and burning in the urethra
  5. painful urge to urinate,
  6. frequent urination in small amounts,
  7. pain in the lower abdomen of variable nature and intensity.

These ailments are an expression of inflammation of the female genital organs, and sometimes also of the lower urinary tract.

2. In men, symptoms of acute inflammation of the foreskin and glans, urethra, bladder, and sometimes also the prostate gland are observed. An expression of this can be:

  1. chills,
  2. increased body temperature,
  3. oozing mucopurulent discharge from the urethra,
  4. uncharacteristic pains in the perineum,
  5. burning and itching of the urethra, accompanied by a frequent need for micturition,
  6. edema,
  7. reddening,
  8. erosions on the glans and the inner surface of the foreskin.

If you have the symptoms mentioned above, check that you are not infected with trichomoniasis. Perform a package of urogenital tests for intimate diseases – 14 pathogens, which you can buy safely and discreetly at Medonet Market. By the way, you will check your health for other intimate diseases.

Symptoms of the chronic form of trichomoniasis

1. In women, chronic trichomoniasis is usually limited to vaginal and urethral infections. The symptoms are similar to those in acute trichomoniasis, but less severe. There is often a profuse vaginal discharge, especially just before or after your period. In longer-lasting trichomoniasis, microscopic changes in the cells of the cervical and vaginal epithelium are revealed, which disappear after the trichomoniasis is cured.

2. In men, chronic disease is characterized by less severe symptoms of inflammation of the foreskin and urethra as described above, which may be accompanied by a slight leakage from the urethra and chronic prostatitis. The infection occurs most often during sexual intercourse (hence in some countries trichomoniasis is classified as sexually transmitted disease), but also bed linen, the use of common sanitary and bathing tools (hence most husbands of infected women also have trichomoniasis).

Trichomoniasis is often accompanied by fungal and bacterial infections, because pathological discharge is a favorable place for them to develop.

Diagnosis of trichomoniasis

In the diagnosis of trichomoniasis, detection with microscopic examination parasites in properly collected and prepared for testing biological material with:

  1. urethral secretions,
  2. vaginal discharge
  3. urine sediment.

Trichomoniasis – treatment

Treatment of people infected with trichomoniasis should be carried out by a doctor, and its effectiveness must be based on control studies of its effectiveness. In order for the treatment to be effective, it is important to simultaneously treat all infected persons in a given family or community living together (e.g. in a dormitory, boarding house) and sexual partners, because the coincidence of infection in partnerships is almost 100%.

The therapy is based on administering metronidazole to the patient. These preparations have a protozoal and bactericidal effect against microorganisms. During treatment, you should refrain from sexual intercourse!

Treatment of one of the partners causes the healed person to be re-infected by the untreated partner in a short time. This leads to the misconception that trichomoniasis is permanent and incurable.

How to prevent trichomoniasis?

  1. taking all precautions necessary for the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, e.g. condoms;
