Trichoblastoma

A trichoblastoma is a benign tumor that originates in the hair follicle, replicating the reproductive part of the hair bulb and the adjacent mesenchymal tissue. The ailment is rare.

What is trichoblastoma?

Trichoblastoma is a mixed epithelial-mesenchymal neoplasm corresponding to a trichoblastic fibroma or a trichogenic trichoblastoma.

Symptoms of trichoblastomy

Symptoms of trichobalstomy most often occur on the head and neck with a predilection for the scalp, but they can also affect other anatomical regions, such as the trunk, proximal surfaces of the limbs or the perianal-genital area. Exceptionally, they can appear on the face, especially on the cheeks, as an infiltrative variant

Trichoblastomas often grow to large sizes for many years, sometimes reaching a diameter of 3 cm, some even 8-10 cm. As a rule, they do not ulcerate. With the exception of children, they can occur in any age group, but most often they affect people between the 5th and 7th decade of life.

Types of the disease

According to Ackerman, there are five types of trichoblastomy:

  1. large nodular,
  2. small nodular,
  3. sitowaty,
  4. reticulate,
  5. branched.

There may be mucin in the cysts. Mitoses are atypical, cell pleomorphism is pronounced, while necrosis and ulceration are rare. Hair matrix cells must be found in the infiltrate.

Trichoblastoma – diagnosis

The study reveals immunohistochemically cytokeratins. Trichoblastoma should be differentiated from:

  1. a skin pigmented birthmark,
  2. basal cell carcinoma,
  3. epidermal cyst,
  4. other adnexal tumors.

Trichoblastoma – treatment

Treatment of ailments is based on the surgical removal of the lesion.
