Clinical trials for a new coronavirus drug have begun in the UK. The preparation in the form of a nasal spray, according to the first findings, has as much as 99,9 percent. effectiveness. The agent is produced by a Canadian company.
Spray on the nose and coronavirus
The task of the substance is to kill the virus in the upper respiratory tract and prevent the pathogen from incubating and spreading to the lungs. SaNOtize is based on nitric oxide, a substance that is also produced in the human body and has antimicrobial properties, writes the AP agency, recalling that the direct effect of nitric oxide on the COVID-19 virus SARS-CoV-2 has been proven.
A study at the Utah State University showed that SaNOtize was 99,9 percent effective. In turn, a rodent test conducted at Colorado State University confirmed a reduction of 95%. the presence of the coronavirus in the body on the first day after infection. Clinical trials are already underway in Canada and elsewhere.
– Be happy with any attempt to treat the coronavirus. The fact that a relative straightforward nasal spray can be an effective drug is good news that will greatly enhance our measures to combat this debilitating disease, said Dr. Pankaj Sharma, professor of neurology and director of the University of London’s Cardiovascular Research Institute.
The importance of nitric oxide in the human body and its healing properties were first discovered by a professor at Stanford University in the USA, Ferid Murad, who, among others, for this research he was awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with others; Murad is a board member of SaNOtize – reminds AP.
– Nitric oxide is an extremely versatile molecule that regulates almost everything in our body. Its use as a medicine has been well proven to be safe, and it has also been shown to be effective in the fight against various viruses, bacteria and fungi. (…) I believe SaNOtize technology is safe and can be effective in treating infections, including COVID-19, Murad said.
Following successful clinical trials, the drug manufacturers intend to apply for conditional approval, first in Canada and then in the UK and the European Union.
– Think of it as an effective method of protecting the upper respiratory tract, similar to hand disinfection, when we want to protect the outer parts of our body. When people are potentially at risk of infection, they will use the spray to clear their upper respiratory tract and kill the coronavirus before it causes a fatal disease – described the effects of the substance, Rob Wilson, who is responsible for clinical trials throughout Europe.
