Thrush in newborns and infants manifests itself as a white curdled plaque on the oral mucosa. It can be easily removed with a cotton swab or gauze swab, but after a while the plaque reappears and can cause discomfort and even pain. In severe cases, the infection can spread throughout the body and cause the crumbs to have a fever and disturbances in the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract.

In order to prevent complications, it is important to start treating thrush when the first symptoms appear.

In the early stages of the disease, folk remedies help well, the most popular of which is a baking soda solution. To prepare it, you need to dilute a teaspoon of soda powder in 100 ml of warm boiled water. A small piece of sterile gauze should be moistened with a fresh solution and treated with the crumbs’ mouth. It is advisable to carry out the procedure either half an hour before the next feeding, or an hour after it. You can get rid of thrush in this way in 3-5 days.

Often, the fungus affects the nipples and the skin around them, and therefore it will not be superfluous to treat the mammary glands of a nursing mother. Thus, it will be possible to save the baby from re-infection.

Herbal decoctions also have a good effect. They should be used in the same way as with a baking soda solution.

The following plants have an anti-inflammatory and restorative effect:

  • sage
  • calendula
  • camomile
  • loosestrife
  • St. John’s Wort

They should be brewed at the rate of: a teaspoon of chopped herbs in half a glass of boiling water. The baby’s oral cavity should be treated with exclusively freshly prepared, strained and cooled broth. The duration of treatment is 7-10 days.

If the baby’s thrush cannot be treated with folk remedies, you should resort to drug therapy. Before using pharmacy drugs, you should consult a doctor so that he draws up an effective and safe medication regimen.

The most popular topical remedy for thrush is Candide solution.

They should process the baby’s oral cavity for 3-7 days (depending on the severity of the disease). Miramistin is considered an equally effective alternative, but it is not recommended to use it in children under the age of three months.

In severe cases, thrush in infants can be treated with oral medications. The most popular and effective are drugs based on fluconazole (Diflucan, Mikomax, etc.). With their help, it is possible to cope with the disease in literally a matter of days, but such treatment should be carried out under the supervision of a doctor.
