Phimosis is a condition in which the foreskin cannot be removed from the glans penis. In the less advanced stage of this ailment, it is possible to partially slide the foreskin, while the glans is not visible at all – both when the penis is at rest and when it is erect. It causes pain and discomfort, so surgical intervention is necessary. In some cases, widening the foreskin is enough. It may happen, however, that it will be necessary to partially or completely remove it.
What is phimosis?
Phimosis prevents the foreskin from slipping off the glans penis. This significantly hinders hygiene, which leads to the development of inflammation and bacterial infections.

The narrowed opening of the foreskin also causes pain during intercourse. In extreme cases, it can lead to kidney disease, bladder and even penile cancer, so this ailment should not be underestimated.
- Frenulum of the foreskin – operation, indications, side effects. Shortening the frenulum of the foreskin
You can get rid of the problem through a surgical procedure called foreskin plastic surgery. Sometimes, however, it turns out that the only solution that can say goodbye to the problem of phimosis once and for all is circumcision, i.e. complete or partial dissection of the foreskin.
Although phimosis is often spoken of in the context of children, it can occur at any age and for a variety of reasons.
Treatment of phimosis
While in the case of children, treatment of phimosis is usually not necessary (usually the foreskin loosens itself after some time), in adult men it is usually necessary to undergo a procedure to widen the foreskin. The operation is also performed in young boys whose phimosis has not resolved spontaneously. The procedures performed in the treatment of phimosis are:
- foreskin plastic surgery, i.e. its extension,
- partial circumcisioni.e. partial removal of the foreskin,
- total circumcisionthat is, removing the entire foreskin.
It happens that the only solution to the problem of phimosis is the complete removal of the foreskin.

Contraindications to the phimosis treatment
As with any surgical intervention, there are certain contraindications in the case of phimosis surgery, which make it impossible to perform the procedure. They are mainly:
- serious liver and kidney diseases,
- blood coagulation disorders,
- active infections,
- cancers.
Relative contraindications, i.e. those that exclude the patient only for a certain period of time, include diabetes, taking certain medications, skin breakdown at the site of the procedure, and poor test results that were previously recommended by a doctor.
- What is the average penis size? How to measure it correctly?
The course of foreskin plasty
After qualifying the patient for the procedure, the specialist will inform him about how to prepare for the procedure. It is necessary to be fully healthy – treating any inflammation affects the proper course of convalescence.
The phimosis treatment takes about an hour. It is performed under local anesthesia. If it is possible to preserve the foreskin, plastic surgery is performed. The surgeon then widens the opening of the foreskin by making longitudinal incisions in one or more places along the penis axis. After the leather is properly shaped, it is sewn together.
Foreskin plastic surgery can be performed with a scalpel, electric knife or laser. The doctor selects the appropriate method for a given patient based on the indications and preferences of a man with the problem of phimosis.

Phimosis surgery – price
The cost of surgical treatment of phimosis depends, among other things, on the scope of the treatment, as well as the location and reputation of the facility. Prices start from PLN 500 in smaller, private clinics and end at up to PLN 3500 in large clinics. The average cost of the procedure is PLN 1600.
Phimosis surgery – post-treatment recommendations
Foreskin surgery is associated with a low probability of complications such as hemorrhage or infection. The recovery period after surgery usually takes up to four weeks.
- Peyronie’s disease – what is it characterized by?
After surgery, patients may complain of swelling and redness of the penis, which is completely natural. Pain may last for several days, but is usually moderate, so it does not require strong medications and disappears with paracetamol. It is very important to wash the wound with the agents recommended by the doctor (eg Octenisept) throughout the wound healing.
For 4 days after the procedure, you must not take salicylates or drink alcohol. You should give up sexual intercourse for about a month, that is, for the entire period of wound healing. Earlier intimate contacts could cause discomfort and pain.
While you can return to office work 2-3 days after the surgery (to physical work after about a week), you should avoid excessive effort for about 3 weeks. This is also what you have to wait back to exercise.
In case of disturbing symptoms or if you have any doubts, it is necessary to contact your doctor.
It is also worth remembering that the time to heal a wound is an individual matter, so you have to attend scheduled follow-up visits. The final effects of the treatment are visible after about a month, i.e. after the wound has completely healed.
