Inflammation of the nasal mucosa, resulting in a runny nose, often leads to swelling. For young children, especially babies, this is especially unpleasant. The nasal passages of babies are very narrow, so even a slight swelling of the mucous membranes leads to respiratory failure and problems with feeding (due to the fact that the child is forced to breathe through his mouth while sucking). The result is malnutrition, poor sleep and a general deterioration in health. How can a child’s parents deal with nasal edema, avoiding complications?

How to clear a baby’s nose

A very small child, of course, does not know how to blow his nose on his own, so parents need to periodically clean his nasal cavity. The accumulated phlegm is removed using a rubber can, as well as flagella from twisted gauze or cotton wool. The spout of the can should be inserted carefully, to a depth of no more than 1 centimeter, after fixing the baby’s head. The flagella should not be very small, and in no case should they be released from the fingers, since then the child can inhale them, and this is dangerous! Also, to cleanse the baby’s nose, you can use an aspirator, which is sold by the pharmacy chain.

In order to soften the formed crusts and facilitate the removal of phlegm, it is recommended to drip a few drops of a decoction of chamomile, sage or drugs such as “Salin”, “Aquamarine” into each nostril of the child before the procedure. The resulting crust also softens well with olive, peach or almond oil.

You can also use breast milk for instillation. In some cases, it works well.

What drugs can relieve nasal swelling

To reduce the swelling of the nose, you can use a number of vasoconstrictor drugs, such as “Nazivin”, “Otrivin”, “Brizolin” and the like. To determine the correct dosage for the child’s age, carefully read the instructions that came with the drug.

It is recommended to use the remedy prescribed by the doctor, since these drugs have not only local effects, but also general ones, being rapidly absorbed into the blood.

If the swelling of the nose is caused by bacterial inflammation, according to the doctor’s prescription, you can use the Isofra spray, Derinat solution or Bactroban ointment, as well as some homeopathic medicines. In addition, regularly ventilate the room where the sick child is, do wet cleaning. The baby needs to be given boiled water often (but little by little).

Swelling of the nose can occur not only against the background of respiratory diseases, but also due to allergies. In this case, your child will be prescribed antihistamines. Also, you will need to exclude the baby’s contact with the allergen.

Swelling of the nose can be accompanied by complications, so if you notice that your baby has difficulty breathing, call your doctor at home.
