Treat periodontitis with natural remedies
Good dental hygiene is essential to prevent the onset of gingivitis and periodontitis. Once the disease has set in, it is imperative to receive treatment from a dentist to stop the process of destruction. However, some natural products could help reduce inflammation of the gums (see the gingivitis sheet), but more studies are needed to confirm their effectiveness. |

Thyme, eucalyptus and menthol. Present in some mouthwashes, they could be effective in fighting against the formation of dental plaque and thus limit the risk of gingivitis. Thymol10 would be one of the main agents responsible for this effect.
Borage oil (Borago officinalis). A study11 suggests that borage oil might reduce inflammation of the gums. This oil is a source of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which belongs to the family of omega-6 fatty acids.
Propolis. Honey may play therapeutic role in treating gingivitis, study finds12 published in 2007. Other studies have also suggested the beneficial effect of propolis13,14 in this pathology. Most recent, conducted in 201215, has shown the effectiveness of rinsing the mouth twice a week with a hydroalcoholic solution containing 20% propolis in addition to tooth resurfacing.
Yogurt (yogurt). A study16 suggests that regular consumption of yogurt may decrease the risk of developing gingivitis. It would be the probiotics present in yogurts that would have this effect on periodontal disease, gingivitis and periodontitis.
