Italy: useful tips for tourists

Please note that Russian plugs for electrical appliances do not fit standard sockets in Italy. Take your adapter with you.

Fountains

Often the negative impressions of the trip are the fault of the tourists themselves. There is a local myth, clearly designed for gullible visitors: everyone who plunges into the Trevi Fountain will be forever young.

And gullible travelers climb into the fountain, and vigilant law enforcement officers are right there. The fine for this “bathing” will empty your pocket for 500 euros.

On TV in the summertime, Italians are shown bathing in fountains. But it’s on TV. An attempt to plunge into the fountain will actually cost 100 euros.

Taxi

Sometimes tourists have to take a taxi. There are two fares in Rome: inside the ring road, 1 km of the route costs 92 cents, and outside it, 1,52 euros / km. Taxi drivers sometimes consider the cost as if the trip was made only in the 2nd zone.

You need to be careful during the trip. The taxi driver’s zone number is shown on the counter display on the right. There is a 21.00% discount for single passengers – women in a Rome taxi from 1 pm to 10 am. Taxi drivers often forget to inform about this.

Taxis cannot be stopped on the street – there are parking lots for that. Taxis can be ordered at the hotel, bar or on the phone on the street.

Photo on the street

Tourists often find themselves in odd situations with photographing on the streets. For example, a local resident in the image of a Roman soldier invites them to take a photo as a souvenir. And then he presents an invoice for 5-10 euros. Pre-ask about the price of such a photo.

Sometimes shameless Arabs offer to photograph you with your smartphone or camera against the backdrop of a sight. Then they do not give the camera away until you pay the named amount.

Cafes and restaurants in Italy

In the invoice that will be presented to you in a restaurant or cafe in Italy, there is a line with the word “covered”. This means payment for the use of tablecloths, cutlery. Literally translated, this is “table setting service”. You need to know about this in order not to get into a mess.

The cost of this service is 1-3 euros per person, depending on the class of the restaurant. Tourists who do not know such rules and do not know the language raise a scandal: they didn’t order IT!

By the way, it is advisable to pay immediately. There was such a case in Rome: my husband and I “landed” to have a snack in a street cafe. Ordered a pizza and two beers. After they cleaned up behind us, they brought an invoice with the names of the dishes that we didn’t eat.

We became indignant, but the cashier and the waiter insisted that we ate what was indicated on the invoice. And if we do not pay the indicated amount, they will call the police. We could not prove anything. Bravo! 1: 0 in favor of the cafe!

Lunch in Italian restaurants from 12.00 to 15.30, dinner from 19.00. You can leave a tip in the amount of 7-10% of the cost of the dinner if you really liked the service.

Beware of theft!

  • do not put phones on tables in street cafes. It is possible that a “traveler” with a map will come up to you to ask how to get to place “X”. After receiving information from you, he will remove the card from the table along with your phone;
  • the subway and overcrowded buses are the “work place” for pickpockets.
