Trauma Center closed. Doctors on sick leave, the head of the department resigns

Trauma Center for patients with the most severe injuries in the provincial hospital. Copernicus in Łódź suspended until further notice. The situation is very serious. There is no one to work on the ward. Seven orthopedic doctors are on sick leave, and the head of the department resigned. Patients with multi-organ injuries will be admitted to other hospitals.

After orthopedic doctors terminated opt-out contracts that allowed them to be on duty for more than 48 hours a week, there was a shortage of doctors to fill the duty in February.

Last Thursday, the management of the medical facility issued a decision to close the Trauma Center. The solution to the problems with the staffing was to introduce the so-called equivalent working time – more flexible disposition of the working hours of specialists. This was to ensure a XNUMX/XNUMX staffing on the ward. Orthopedic specialists criticized this system of work from the very beginning. In their opinion, it would introduce unnecessary chaos and the lack of continuity of patient care due to the specific nature of the ward.

Unfortunately, the problem could not be solved. The head of the department was unable to arrange the schedule so that a sufficient number of doctors worked, among other things because as many as seven went on sick leave.

On Friday, the head of the trauma and orthopedic surgery department at the Copernicus Hospital filed a motion to dismiss him from his post.

The work of the only Trauma Center in the region has been suspended until further notice.

Patients will be referred to other Trauma Centers depending on the scene of the event, incl. to Bydgoszcz, Warsaw or Poznań. Less serious injuries will be treated at the hospital. WAM, CKD, Zgierz or the hospital. Jonscher.
