Trance is an altered state of consciousness in which the critical perception of information ceases and the ability to consistently analyze and comprehend decreases.
«I’m in a trance!» usually means «I can’t think.»
Trance can be called light, everyday hypnosis. It can be said in another way: it is the capture of consciousness by an external force, which is now beginning to own consciousness. According to V.V. Kucherenko, trance is “a change in the processes of categorization, when a person switches from a predominantly verbal-logical form of categorization, which is typical for a normal state of consciousness, to categorization in the form of visual-sensual images.”
Trance can be both positive (trance after a good bath or serious physical activity) and negative (after a fight or divorce). Trance can be both productive (inspiration) and a hindrance to business (confusion). A natural trance in everyday life is an everyday trance, in contrast to an induced trance in conditions specially created for this: “Lie down. Feel the relaxation in your arms, in your legs, in your whole body ”- See Autotraining and Ericksonian Hypnosis
Outwardly, it looks as if the person is “not here”: the gaze is turned “inside oneself”, breathing is slowed down, the body is relaxed. As a rule, this is a fixed look of slightly defocused eyes, sometimes a freezing of a gesture or movement.
When and who gets trance? Trance is not rare and not some special state, people are in a trance quite often, but they do not always notice it.
How and why to create a trance?
There are many techniques for inducing a trance state. Many creative people themselves put themselves into a trance, sometimes they just live in it, making it not a changed, but a natural state of consciousness for them. However, for those around them, they have an altered state of consciousness. For them, they have a natural creative state of consciousness, while others live in a template.
If at least a minimal trance has arisen, it is not difficult to maintain it: it is enough to speak warmly, calmly and confidently, superimposing the text on your breathing and the interlocutor’s. The result of this is the same: by giving clear and confident formulations to an interlocutor who is in a state of light trance, you can write information into his consciousness without critical reflection.
Perhaps, in a normal state, your phrase: “You are brave, beautiful and talented” will twist an ironic smile. In a state of trance, he will accept this as new information about himself.
It is believed that trance provides direct access to the unconscious, is a kind of «window» through which you can look into it. Specific trance behaviors include:
- age regression (remembering past events without prior attempts at conscious recall);
- age progression (experiencing future scenarios before the actual occurrence of the events displayed in them);
- the phenomenon of the «hidden observer» (imaginary observation of oneself during any action);
- dissociation;
- catalepsy (freezing of the whole body or limbs in any position and loss of the ability to voluntary movements due to * concentration / suggestion);
- ideomotor or psychomotor actions (involuntary movements of the fingers, head, etc., occurring without ordinary awareness);
- self-hypnosis;
- loss of pain sensitivity (under the influence of suggestion and concentration);
- amnesia;
- automatic writing: an influx of images;
- distorted perception of time;
- closing eyes and relaxation.
It should be taken into account that, according to experts, the fashionable word «trance» today means a variety of things and in reality this concept does not have a solid content. You can listen to a discussion of this in the dialogue of N.I. Kozlova and T.V. Gagina.mp3.
