Traffic Police Day (GAI) in 2022: the history and traditions of the holiday
To remind people of the importance and significance of the profession of traffic police officers, the Traffic Police Day (GAI) was established. What day does it fall on in 2022

Almost every profession has its own special day of the year. It is also available to traffic police officers. it July 3. It is on this day that they celebrate the Day of the traffic police (GAI). This date is constant and does not change from year to year: in other words, it is fixed in the holiday calendar.

July 3 is not an official holiday (we rest on this day only if it falls on Saturday or Sunday). But this does not make the Traffic Police Day less significant, because the purpose of this holiday is to remind the public of the important role of the State Traffic Inspectorate in ensuring road safety, increase the prestige of the service, and also “preserve continuity in the work of traffic police departments.” In any case, this is what the order says, declaring July 3 the Day of the traffic police.

History

At the state level, this day began to be celebrated quite recently. After all, it was only in 2009 that the then Minister of Internal Affairs Rashid Nurgaliyev signed an order “On the announcement of the Day of the State Inspectorate for Road Safety of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Federation.” Meanwhile, unofficially, traffic cops have considered July 80 their day for more than 3 years.

The fact is that it was more than 80 years ago that the first State Automobile Inspectorate appeared in the Soviet Union. The corresponding resolution was signed by the Council of People’s Commissars on July 3, 1936. Since then, traffic police officers have taken the habit of unofficially celebrating every third day of the second summer month.

After the collapse of the USSR, a new state was formed – the Federation – which also needed a service responsible for road safety. In this regard, on May 28, 1992, the government of the Federation approved the “Regulations on the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Our Country.”

For the next six years, everything was unchanged, but in 1998 the authorities decided to rename the traffic police to the traffic police, believing that the “State Inspectorate for Road Safety” better reflected the essence of the activities of its employees. And already in 2002, it was decided to return the old name to the service, or rather, give the service a second official historical name – the State Traffic Inspectorate (GAI).

Traditions

By tradition, those traffic police officers who were lucky enough to celebrate their holiday in the service put on a white dress uniform on this day.

As early as July 3, it is customary to organize solemn lines, at which, as a rule, congratulatory telegrams from the highest officials of our country are read out, and the best employees of the traffic police are awarded certificates of honor and medals. Particularly distinguished traffic cops on this day are promoted in positions and ranks. And all this, as a rule, takes place in a solemn atmosphere.

In addition, demonstration exercises and demonstrations of special equipment are often held on July 3 to help traffic police officers ensure road safety.

Also on the Day of employees of the State traffic inspectorate, it is customary to organize concerts dedicated to the main heroes of the occasion. They are usually attended by pop stars, who, during their performances, congratulate traffic police officers on their professional holiday and wish them all the best. Also, at such events, words of gratitude are expressed to the employees of the traffic police for their hard work.

Even on the Day of the traffic police, it is customary to wash the stars, that is, new ranks. Usually, traffic cops who have received a promotion on their holiday throw their new stars (the very ones that will then need to be sewn to shoulder straps) into a glass filled with some (preferably strong) alcoholic drink. After that, they drink the contents of the glass in one gulp, holding the stars with their teeth.
