Inadequate diet and a passive lifestyle can lead to an increase in the level of bad cholesterol in the blood, which often leads to serious diseases of the cardiovascular system. One of the medications recommended for high cholesterol is Torvacard. Before use, it is worth reading its leaflet.
Torvacard – indications
Torvacard is used in the case of high cholesterol and lipoprotein levels in the blood. Its use is indicated in the event of ineffectiveness of non-pharmacological therapy in conjunction with a diet limiting the consumption of cholesterol and saturated fat. Before starting treatment with Torvacard, it is first necessary to rule out secondary causes of hypercholesterolaemia, such as diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism, dysproteinemia, obstructive jaundice, nephrotic syndrome, alcoholism and other medications. The active substance is atorvastatin.
Torvacard – action
Lek Torvocard:
- lowers the concentration of triglycerides,
- increases the concentration of good cholesterol (HDL),
- lowers the level of bad cholesterol (LDL),
- lowers total cholesterol.
Torvacard – dosage
Torvacard is a tablet medicine for oral use. The drug can be taken with or without food. Both the dose and the frequency of taking Torvacard are determined by the doctor. Effective treatment is influenced by:
- following the doctor’s instructions,
- limiting the amount of grapefruit juice consumed,
- following a low-fat diet,
- regular liver function tests,
- Torvacard and alcohol – alcoholic drinks are not recommended during treatment,
- use of the drug within the expiry date, stored in a tightly closed container,
- taking tablets only for a disease specified by the doctor (and they must not be made available to third parties).
Torvacard – contraindications
You should refrain from taking Torvacard if you:
- allergic reactions to atorvastatin or any other substance in the preparation,
- myopathies,
- lactase deficiency,
- liver dysfunction,
- hereditary galactose intolerance
- glucose-galactose malabsorption,
- taking other cholesterol-lowering drugs, anticoagulants, antifungal drugs, antiarrhythmic drugs, macrolide antibiotics, including erythromycin, antacids, cyclosporine, oral contraceptive pills and other drugs, even over the counter
- suspicion of pregnancy, pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Torvacard – side effects
Certain side effects may occur with the use of Torvacard. Belong to them:
- constipation, flatulence, dyspepsia,
- diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, anorexia,
- headaches and dizziness,
- insomnia,
- allergic reactions
- sensory disturbances,
- muscle and joint pain,
- itching, skin rash, hives
- general weakness and fatigue,
- back pain, chest pain,
- peripheral edema,
- thrombocytopenia,
- hypoglycemia lub hyperglycemia,
- alopecia
- inflammation of the pancreas,
- impotence,
- weight gain.
Myositis, hepatitis and cholestatic jaundice are much less common with Torvacard treatment.
