Making a good movie is not an easy task in itself, but making a good sequel is even more difficult. Especially in situations where it is not possible to attract the leading actors of the original or the original story has a finished look and does not need to be continued.
Wanting to “cut the dough” on the popularity of the first part, the creators sometimes give out such a product, which can not always be called a film.
So here are the 10 worst sequels that fans of the originals are hurting for.
10 Speed 2: Cruise control | 1998
The original “Speed” in 1994 turned out to be a peppy action movie that kept the viewer in suspense and did not let them get bored. Last but not least, this happened thanks to the duo of Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves, who interacted perfectly with each other.
Reeves opted out of filming the sequel, opting to tour with his band Dogstar instead. The team did not achieve great success, but it is still better than what Jan de Bont shot without him.
The little-known actor Jason Patric could not replace Keanu in any way, and Bullock alone simply “did not pull out” an absurd plot. The situation was slightly brightened up by Willem Dafoe, who played a terrorist, but the film still failed at the box office.
The first part was filmed for 30 million dollars and collected 350 million, receiving at the same time a couple of technical Oscars, and the sequel for 160 million (!) did not even pay off and earned 8 Golden Raspberry nominations, becoming the worst sequel of the year.
9. Model male 2 | 2016
Another “triumphant” of the Golden Raspberry Award: 7 nominations at the end of the year. The first part, although it was an amateur, still contained at least the beginnings of humor. Not a masterpiece, but a look at once will do.
The continuation turned out to be simply unpleasant to watch, causing the viewer to have “Spanish shame”.
8. Dirty Dancing 2: Havana Nights | 2004
The original 1987 tape was a breakthrough for actress Jennifer Grey, and Patrick Swayze was made a sex symbol. Even now, the film is considered one of the best on the theme of dance, which cannot be said about its sequel. It starred unknown actors, and the budget was very modest. By the way, even it was possible to beat him off with a big creak.
7. Butterfly effect 2 | 2004
The script for the first part was gathering dust in Hollywood for a long time, and they still did not dare to film it until it fell into the hands of Ashton Kutcher. He invested his own money in production, becoming one of the producers, and also played a major role.
An excellent tape with 4 different endings (the most harmless version was left in the rental version) was to the taste of both the audience and the critics, but it clearly did not need a continuation, especially this one.
The creators of the sequel took all the best that was in the first part and simply spoiled it. Shooting a film in 6 million and 20 days is somehow not serious when it comes to The Butterfly Effect.
This story also has a triquel, but there the authors did the impossible at all – they did worse than it was in the second part.
6. Basic instinct 2: Risk appetite | 2006
The logically twisted plot, the magnetism of Sharon Stone and the charisma of Michael Douglas made the original a real masterpiece for fans of the genre.
In 1992, the film became a real phenomenon, receiving 2 Oscar nominations, a decent box office and the delight of the public.
Producers and director Paul Verhoeven were well aware that the story was over, so they worked on other projects with a clear conscience, but 14 years later, Michael Cayton-Jones for some reason decided to make a sequel and even lured Sharon Stone into it.
She, of course, is a prominent woman, but at the age of 48 even she cannot win back sexuality, so 7 nominations for the Golden Raspberry, 4 of which turned out to be winning, became a well-deserved finale.
5. Three X 2: New level | 2005
The first part was filmed according to all the canons: a brutal protagonist, chic special effects, a banal, but without idiocy plot, good camera work.
In the sequel, the main ingredient, Vin Diesel, was removed from this recipe, but idiocy was poured from the heart into the plot narrative. What the authors thought when changing the Fast and the Furious star to Ice Cube remains a mystery.
Without recapturing the budget, the studio forgot about the project for a long time, until they again agreed with Diesel. The gatherings of “World Domination” clearly showed that “the bald one drags.”
4. Fly 2 | 1989
Filmed by David Cronenberg in 1986, the first part is now in the top 50 best horror films according to IMDb users and for its time it became a landmark work, glorifying the director and giving a huge impetus to the entire genre.
The sequel, filmed by another director, is not included in any decent top and did not have any impact on the genre.
The sequel turned out to be absurd: when watching, the viewer felt not so much fear as disgust, and the question “Well, what for ?!” was spinning in my head.
3. Affair 2 | 1983
The 1973 original is an example of a heist movie. Largely thanks to him, decades later, Ocean’s friends and all the others appeared, since the tape is really iconic.
She received 10 Oscar nominations, taking 7 statuettes (including Best Picture), and the main actors Paul Newman and Robert Redford gained even more popularity.
In the sequel, they categorically refused to act in film, and without them the picture was doomed to failure. The only thing that could save the situation is a dashing plot, but here it is past.
2. Stay alive | 1983
It is a sequel to the 1970 musical Saturday Night Fever starring John Travolta. For the most part, it was he who paved the way for the actor to a big movie, but he clearly shouldn’t have starred in the sequel after 13 years.
If the first part was nominated for an Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe, then the sequel received only nominations for the Golden Raspberry. The film has a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which says a lot.
1. “Dumb and Dumber: When Harry Met Lloyd”, “Son of the Mask”, “Evan Almighty”, “Ace Ventura Jr”
Jim Carrey is a unique actor and it’s silly to argue with that. Not everyone likes his excessive antics, but one cannot but admit that he has a huge talent, so making a sequel to films built entirely on his game without him is a pointless undertaking.
We deliberately did not single out one film, since they are all equally bad. Watching the attempts of some “noname” to repeat Kerry’s facial expressions and gestures is painful.
The only exception is Evan Almighty, which turned out to be generally normal, if not for one thing: they spent 175 million dollars on it (!!!). Just think about how huge this money is, especially by the standards of 2007. The first Iron Man cost $35 million less a year later, and even modern blockbusters often cost less.
