- 1. Andy Dufresne, The Shawshank Redemption | 1994
To an inexperienced viewer, the name of Tim Robbins may not say anything, although everyone will certainly recognize his face. Few people have not watched The Shawshank Redemption, which has become a true classic of world cinema.
However, the role of Andy Dufresne is not the only worthy job in the career of an actor, so today we offer you as many as 10 of his best images on the screen.
10 Norville Barnes, Hudsucker’s Handy | 1994
This comedy was released in the same year as The Shawshank Redemption, but did not become a classic. The film is about a man named Norville who, after graduation, moves to New York and takes a job as a courier for Hudsucker’s large company.
The owner of the company suddenly jumps out of the window and after his death, one of the directors decides to bring down the shares in order to buy them back for next to nothing and take over the business.
To implement his plan, he hires Norville, making him a leader in the hope that due to inexperience, he will quickly lead to a fall in the course. However, the guy turns out to be not so simple, and he definitely has a business streak.
9. Griffin Mill, “Player” | 1992
The comedy-drama was released in 1992 and here Robbins got the role of the head of the film studio named Griffin Mill, who is empowered to choose scripts for future films.
He has to refuse many people, so he has enemies above the roof, and one of them begins to intimidate him by sending threatening letters. In a fit of panic mixed with anger, he kills a man, after which he begins an affair with his widow.
Now he faces two tasks: get out of punishment for the murder and save his chair in the company, which staggered heavily under him. The picture collected many awards, and Robbins himself received a Golden Globe, a prize at the Cannes Film Festival, as well as nominations for BAFTA and Oscar.
8. Jacob Singer, Jacob’s Ladder | 1990
Jacob’s Ladder is a mystical thriller about war veteran Jacob Singer, who is tormented by visions of strange monsters. Linking this to post-traumatic stress, he nevertheless decides to investigate the possible cause of the hallucinations by teaming up with other veterans.
Now this film is considered a cult film, but at the time of release it went unnoticed, did not recoup the budget and received disapproval from critics. In order for you to understand the importance of the picture, we will give just one fact: the main source of inspiration for the creators of the Silent Hill series was precisely Jacob’s Ladder.
6. Walter Larson, “On the Edge” | 2015
The most recent role of Robbins in our selection. On the Edge is an HBO TV series that aired in the summer of 2015. It tells about three different people: an official (played by Jack Black), a military pilot (Pablo Schreiber) and the US Secretary of State, played by Tim Robbins. These people have to solve many problems, establishing not only their own lives, but also trying to prevent the outbreak of the Third World War.
The first season received good reviews and attracted a decent audience, so the channel announced a sequel, which, for unknown reasons, was canceled. So, those who decide to watch “On the Edge” will have to be content with 10 episodes.
5. B, “Perfect Day” | 2015
The plot of the film tells about an international group of people who are faced with the task of pulling a corpse from a well that poisons the water in it. This is happening against the backdrop of the war in the Balkans, so such a simple task at first glance turns out to be difficult in practice.
Tim Robbins plays one of the team members named B, and his partners on the set are Benicio del Toro, Olga Kurylenko and Melanie Thierry. Despite the average quality of the film itself, the performance of del Toro and Robbins delighted even those who smashed the tape itself to smithereens.
5. Oliver Lang, “Doroga na Arlington” | 1998
This is one of Robbins’ most unusual roles, as he plays a terrorist who carefully hides his identity. He settles in a quiet area with his wife and son, and his neighbor is Michael Faraday, a history teacher whose wife was an FBI agent and died in a terrorist attack.
He, like his son, barely survived her death, and the hatred for the radicals that settled inside makes Michael begin to suspect his new neighbor. The film is also notable for the fact that despite the presence of a clear villain, it does not cause hatred. Not least thanks to the charm of the actor who played him.
4. Nick Beam, Nothing to Lose | 1997
In this film, Tim tried on the image of a comedian, and, contrary to the skepticism of some critics, the result was excellent. He plays a successful insurance salesman, Nick Beam, whose life falls apart the day he catches his wife having sex with his boss.
Psyhanized, he gets into the car and accidentally drives into the “black” area, where he is trying to rob the loser Terence (Martin Lawrence). Nick locks himself in the car with the robber and begins to race along the oncoming lane, terrifying the criminal. Gradually, they find a common language and they develop a strange but strong friendship.
3. Dave Boyle, “Mystic River” | 2003
We simply could not ignore this character, because it was the image of Dave Boyle that brought Tim Robbins the only Oscar in his career, for the best supporting actor. His co-star, Sean Penn, also received his statuette, but for the title role.
The plot tells about three friends: Dave, Sean and Jimmy. When they were children, they were caught for hooliganism by a neighbor who identified himself as a policeman and allegedly took Dave to the police station. In fact, he turned out to be a pedophile and raped the boy for a long time until he managed to escape. After 30 years, fate brings friends together again: Jimmy’s daughter is killed, Sean, who has become a policeman, is investigating the case, and Dave becomes the main suspect.
2. Joseph, The Secret Life of Words | 2005
A stunning love story from Spanish director Isabel Coixet, in which Robbins plays an injured worker on an oil rig who temporarily lost his sight.
He is cared for by the girl Hannah, who has fled from her terrible past and people. Gradually, relationships are established between the characters, built on understanding each other’s pain, motivating and inspiring the viewer.
1. Andy Dufresne, The Shawshank Redemption | 1994
Let’s finish the selection with a role that has already been mentioned more than once. Despite the excellent work in The Gambler, which brought a lot of awards, it was after the Shawshank Redemption that Tim woke up as a real star.
The role of the undeservedly convicted Andy Dufresne, who has been preparing an escape and a future life in the wild for many years, has become almost the standard of acting. Calm and quiet, but at the same time with a steel will, the character is a real role model when it comes to courage and determination.
