Many people love chilling horror films, especially those where the characters make you shudder just from their appearance. Truly make-up artists sometimes surpass themselves, creating amazing and at the same time frightening images from latex, fabrics, paints, feathers and other materials at hand. Many of the heroes then dream of children in nightmares, while others even become a “common name” among the people, such as Frankenstein.
Did you know that a whole team of make-up artists can spend hours “decorating” an unfortunate actor to shoot an episode for a couple of minutes, or even seconds? At the same time, the actor has to sit in terribly uncomfortable (spiky, hot, heavy, sticky, etc.) costumes, endure the most unpleasant materials on his skin. Many even opened an allergy to the chemistry that is used to create a terrible image. And all this in order for the viewer with rounded pupils to squeeze into the back of his sofa, frantically eating popcorn.
Today we will review 10 horror film stars who are real cuties in real life, but for the sake of the role they turned into the most unexpected and creepy images.
10 Jason Voorhees – Ari Lehman (Friday the 13th, 1980)
Only one name of the film immediately draws before the eyes the image of a stocky man with a hockey mask on his face. It is known that Voorhees was played by many actors for the series “Fridays”, but the first one was Ari Lehman.
When the actor first appeared for the audition of the film, he was immediately approved for the role due to the “necessary dimensions”. At the same time, the boy was only 15 years old (and the height required for the role was 180 cm). So Leman played the young Voorhees in one of the parts of the slasher, where with the help of a machete he killed all the spiteful critics in his path.
9. The Collector – Juan Fernandez (The Collector, 2009)
Just look at this face! Juan Fernandez – a hot Latin American guy – surprisingly reincarnated as a maniac killer from the movie The Collector.
All in all – a dubious leather mask on the head, I didn’t even have to make up much. Collect the praise and admiration of the audience for your role in a juicy and unique horror movie, even if in life you are a calm and reserved person.
8. Valak – Bonnie Aarons (The Conjuring 2, 2016)
The specific, to put it mildly, appearance of the actress eventually played into her hands – Bonnie regularly received a variety of roles, both in comedies and in thrillers and horror films.
The woman was not afraid to play the fierce demon Valak from the second part of the film The Conjuring, which was released 3 years ago. Yes, the already asymmetrical appearance of Aarons had to be brought to the final absurdity, but the role brought her considerable popularity. Make-up artists of the project, who did their best, also received their share of praise from the audience.
7. Leatherface – Gunnar Hansen (Texas Chainsaw Massacre, 1974)
The favorite series of horror films “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” is remembered precisely because of the main character Leatherface. The film shot in the 70s in the conservative USSR, exciting the minds of young people unaccustomed to such reincarnations.
On the screen, the actor Hansen, under a terrible mask of skin (of course, not human), was swinging a chainsaw to the right and left so that the limbs flew off. Good-natured Gunnar, by the way, starred in various unpopular horror films and beyond.
6. Pale Man – Doug Jones (Pan’s Labyrinth, 2006)
I wonder if Doug was given the role for his natural pallor, because the skin is really “sour cream”. Oh, and it’s not easy for him, probably, to sunbathe on the beach without a protective cream! Even in the charming smile of the actor there is something sinister and chilling the soul, don’t you think?
It was easier to make up an actor with such natural data, although the image required careful study and many details. Well, it turned out very original and impressive.
5. Redford – Arthur Roberts (Midnight Movie, 2008)
In the film, a man again appears in overalls and a mask – how trite. The novelty of the image is only that the mask looks like a mixture of a cracked skull and a leather muzzle. But who was hiding under this mask?
Just look at the cute grandpa Arthur Roberts, who is impossible to recognize in this image. Of course, the old man went too far with plastic surgery, but he is no stranger to it, because at one time he already “tasted” the work of make-up artists in full.
4. Creeper – Jonathan Breck (Jeepers Creepers, 2001)
Adults of the current generation still remember the Jeepers Creepers song. Now, watching a horror movie and its sequel, you can only smile – it’s not scary at all, and make-up and masks seem unnatural and “cheap”.
At that time, we can say that the make-up artists and designers did a good job, because the handsome and charming Jonathan Breck so organically fit into the role of the Creeper monster eating people.
3. Ghost – Dane Farwell (Scream, 1996)
Few people knew that the maniac in the cape and mask from the Scream film series has the nickname Ghost. And even fewer people were interested in what the person who played this mocking and charming villain looked like in real life.
Here, meet Dane Farwell, a sweet man with the kindest eyes. It seems that in his life he didn’t even kill a fly, and here is a villain with a knife who killed young girls.
2. Freddy Krueger – Robert Englund (A Nightmare on Elm Street, 1984)
It is impossible to forget about Kruger – that’s an idea, that’s an idea. A man disfigured by burns comes with sabers on the phalanxes and kills you in your sleep. After such a film, hundreds of horror fans were afraid to fall asleep. Did you know that Robert Englund starred in all eight episodes of the Kruger franchise?
The permanent character, it turns out, is quite a pretty man in life. By the way, Englund starred in a number of horror films, such as Vampire Wars, Zombie Strippers, etc.
1. Samara – Daveigh Chase (Call, 2002)
The review is completed by a girl who, at a young age, began her career with such an unseemly role as Samara from The Ring. Yes, yes, the same long-haired disfigured girl who crawled out of the TV, trying to kill everyone in her path. Next in career
Chase was followed by other projects (Charmed TV series, Donnie Darko film, etc.), but it was the cult role in The Ring that launched the career of this sweet smiling actress.
Right, horror actors in life should not be afraid, but only applauded for their stamina, willpower and excellent acting. Many of them simply “made” our childhood, giving memorable dark characters and vivid emotions, coupled with adrenaline.
