The most famous American film award “Oscar” is awarded to artists for their contribution to cinema. The awards ceremony takes place annually, gathering all lovers of good cinema at the TV screens.
Of course, any assessment is very subjective. And in history there are films that are madly in love with a million viewers, but at the same time they were not awarded the coveted film award.
We invite you to familiarize yourself with ten films that did not receive a gold statuette, remaining only nominees.
10 Wolf of Wall Street | 2013
The main role in the film was played by actor Leonardo DiCaprio, which already predicted a resounding success for the film and at least two Oscar nominations: for Best Picture and Best Actor. The film was awarded nominations, but in the end it didn’t receive a single statuette, losing the award to the film 12 Years a Slave.
Jordan Belfort, thanks to his innate charisma and the way he communicates with clients, opens his own company with his housemate. And the better the company develops and grows, the more reckless ways of recreation Belfort begins to prefer.
Drugs, alcohol, prostitutes and countless parties… This is not a story about a man who has achieved everything on his own.
This is a story about how much money and power can corrupt.
9. Seven | 1995
The film “Seven” is strong even if only with its cast: starring Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman, and the film is directed by the famous David Fincher. However, the film was awarded only a nomination for the best editing, alas, the film did not even receive this statuette.
The story revolves around an elderly detective, William Somerset, who plans to retire and leave the bustling city.
But 7 days before his resignation, two events occur: Somerset gets a young and inexperienced partner, and the city is shaken by the news of a new murder. By virtue of experience, William is not mistaken when he assumes that the murder is not a single one, which means that you need to throw all your strength into finding a maniac killer.
8. Midnight in Paris | 2011
In 2012, the film “Midnight in Paris” was nominated for “Oscar” in four positions, however, received an award only for the best screenplay. In the nomination “Best Film” that year, the film “Artist” won.
The protagonist of the film is the romantic and dreamer Gil, who always wanted to live in Paris in the 20s. One day, Gil discovers the magic of his native city, and he is transported to the era of his dreams in the very center of vibrant Paris.
Gil enters the circle of his idols: Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Picasso and Dali, and also meets an incredibly charming girl, Andriana.
7. Flowers of lilac fields | 1985
1985 film starring Whoopi Goldberg and Danny Glover. The film was nominated for 11 Oscar statuettes, but, unfortunately, did not win in any category.
This is a film about the difficult fate of women, about the desire to gain independence and freedom. Many critics rank the film among the best dramas of American cinema.
In the center of the plot is the heroine Celia, who wants to find her place in life, but understands that the modern world is closed to her, because the action of the film takes place at the beginning of the XNUMXth century in one of the cities of the southern state.
The viewer understands that a difficult fate awaits Celia even in the first minutes of meeting the main character, because Celia is 14, and she is already pregnant. From my own father.
6. American History X | 1998
A 1998 film starring Edward Norton. Norton played the leader of a skinhead gang named Derek Vinyard. Derek is confident in the correctness of his own views, and therefore easily cracks down on any people who have a skin color other than white.
All the actions of the skinhead are watched by Danny’s younger brother, who sees Derek as an example to follow, and therefore Danny is ready to continue his brother’s work when he is finally locked up in prison. The brothers will meet only after a while, when Derek will serve his sentence for the murder of two blacks.
5. Obsession | 2014
Film by Damien Chazelle, released on the big screens in 2014. The film received three Oscars, but the main nomination for Best Picture that year went to Birdman.
A film about a young guy Andrew and his dream of becoming the best drummer. Andrew finds a mentor to achieve his goal and becomes truly obsessed with this goal: he rehearses to exhaustion, playing melodies on the drum.
All history is a struggle. The struggle of a teacher and a student with overcoming human capabilities.
4. Three billboards on the border of Ebbing, Missouri in 2017
The film was nominated for an Oscar in 2018, however, The Shape of Water won Best Picture.
The main character, Mildred Hayes, has her daughter killed, but a few months later, the investigation and search for the killer come to a standstill.
Then Mildred decides to attract public attention by renting out three large billboards at the entrance to his hometown, with an appeal to the head of the police about inaction.
3. Gangs of New York | 2002
The film was released in 2002 and was nominated in 10 Oscar categories, but, unfortunately, was never awarded. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz and Daniel Day-Lewis.
The film is set in New York in the early 60s. In those days, authority was earned by force and cruelty, and therefore the whole city consists of bloodthirsty gangs.
In one of the next skirmishes, the leader of the gang, Bill the Butcher, kills the leader of another gang, Wallon. Wallon’s son enters a reform school and grows up with only one thought: revenge on Bill for the death of his father.
2. Arrival | 2016
The film premiered in 2016, and in 2017 the film was nominated in 7 Oscar categories. As a result, “Arrival” won only the award for the best sound editing, and in the category “Best Film” in 2017, “Moonlight” won.
“Arrival” tells about aliens who have landed on Earth, but do not disclose their intentions and goals. All countries are ready for an attack, and the whole world, with bated breath, wants to know the intentions of extraterrestrial intelligence.
1. Pianist | 2002
An autobiographical film released in 2002. It tells about the Polish pianist, Wladyslaw Shpilman, and the difficult life of Jews in Nazi-occupied Poland.
This movie is about art. About how, in the terrible moments of his life, Vladislav recalled the sounds of the piano and realized that he was not ready to give up.
And this movie is about people. About those who helped Vladislav survive. Not because that famous pianist, not because he’s a Jew, but because he’s just a man. And people should help each other.
