10 Akhaltsikhe
The first thing I want to say is to find accommodation for travelers around the world. Akhaltsikhe won’t be difficult. There are many offers for different wallets. This small town is located on the border with Armenia and Turkey. After the reconstruction in 2011-2012, the city became a tourist destination, although before that it had remained inconspicuous.
Most people come here because of Rabat. This fortress consists of two parts: upper and lower. On the territory of the citadel, you can even sit on the tiles – everything is so clean! Climbing the highest tower, extraordinary views will open before you – just take and take pictures. You can start your acquaintance with the city from the Museum of the History and Culture of the Meskhetians or from the Ahmediye Mosque. Akhaltsikhe is a city of amazing beauty, where every millimeter is saturated with a magical atmosphere.
9. Ushguli
This place seems to be specially designed for meditation – here every nook and cranny is imbued with tranquility and incredible bliss. This city consists of four villages and there are a lot of tourists here. It is worth warning – the roads leave much to be desired, so it is better to get over either in an SUV or in a car with a high seating position.
This city is charming and picturesque with Svan towers. Everything is beautiful here: colors, mountains, sky. The Svan towers of the XNUMXth-XNUMXth centuries are protected by UNESCO. The mountains are especially beckoning – their view is delightful! Georgia has always been famous for its beautiful mountains Ushguli, where time seems to have stopped. A trip here is akin to an adventure that daredevils decide.
Interesting fact: travelers love this place for its authenticity – the city is lost high in the mountains, and the Svan people live in it.
8. Poti
Poti – former ancient Phasis. It differs from Batumi in that it is not so pleasant for tourists: you can’t especially relax on the beaches, there are few sights, there are no mountains nearby and it’s hot. But there will always be lovers who adore Georgian cities. Poti has a different atmosphere – it is part of the Soviet port city.
There are even Stalinist houses in the city center, but the police building here is chic. The most memorable building in Poti is the Cathedral, built at the turn of the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries in the neo-Byzantine style. The priests in it are quite sincere and do not mind being photographed. It is noteworthy that stalinkas in this city can be combined with beautiful buildings.
7. Mestia
Do you want adventure and stormy emotions? Then you should definitely visit. Mestia is a special place in Georgia. This city is located in Upper Svaneti – a region where mountain ranges with snow-capped peaks open up in the transparent atmosphere of the blue sky because of the clouds, and endless hills are covered with a green bright carpet.
There are Svan towers all over Mestia – there are about 150 of them in total. There are magnificent mountains around – some of them are even covered with snow. How pleasant it is to sit in a cafe and look at this beauty while drinking coffee. And the air… Words can’t describe it – fresh and tasty. There is such beauty around, as if you are in a fairy tale movie! The Enguri River attracts attention – fast and cold, but very beautiful. To fully enjoy the views, you can ride the lift.
6. Gori
City Gori changing before our eyes, quiet and cozy. The first thing that comes to mind is the Tiflis province, the Russian Empire, the birthplace of Stalin and the museum dedicated to him. Here, accordingly, tourists look in the first place. To visit this place or not is up to you.
But what is definitely worth a visit on the advice of tourists is the buildings around the park, especially in the evening. Here they turn on the illumination of fountains and paths. There is another museum – Historical and Ethnographic, next to the park. The streets of Gori mainly consist of low-rise buildings. You can climb to the top of the Goristsikhe fortress (free entrance) and admire the magnificent view of the city!
5. Tbilisi
Tbilisi is a city of the soul, in which friendly people live, and in a cafe, inexpensive food is available to everyone. The view from Mount Narikala to the city at night is simply indescribable, the whole city is under your feet. First of all, tourists start from high points: the cable car to Narikala – to the mother of Georgia.
The view from there opens up to the whole city, including the Old one, as well as the Kura River and the Bridge of Peace. A very tempting offer is to bathe in sulfur baths, which Pushkin also praised. What else can you do for the soul? Stand by the waterfall and listen to the sound of water, walk along the old streets of the Old City to feel the atmosphere of Tbilisi. And, of course, don’t forget to visit the famous temple of Tsminda Sameba.
Interesting fact: the townspeople here dry their clothes right on the clothesline, as in the old days. Many tourists are surprised by the colorful “sails” of clothes and other things.
4. Stepantsminda
The village of Stepantsminda is located near the border with Russia. Here are the most beautiful views, the feeling that a fairy tale came to life before your eyes! The main attraction of the city is Gergeti Square. Pets walk all over the city, which cannot but please children. There are plenty of roads here, but walking along them you will never get lost.
What to do in Stepantsminda? Visit the Church of the Holy Trinity, from the mountain which offers fantastic views. Look at the Gveleti waterfall, drive through the Sno Valley and just enjoy the unique atmosphere of a Georgian town surrounded by majestic mountains. By the way, if you want to see the waterfall, you can’t get to it by car, but local drivers can take you to the turnoff to the waterfalls.
3. Kutaisi
Kutaisi is a cozy city with warm people, where staying is a pleasure. It can be called provincial, but like any town in Georgia, it has a special comfort. Tourists first upon arrival go to look at the Colchis Fountain, and then at the stucco molding that adorns the shopping arcade.
The town was founded by Tsar Leon, and Beria and Stalin were imprisoned in Kutaisi. Queen Tamara Street (central) goes through the old districts, reminiscent of Egyptian or Turkish quarters. Palm trees and other interesting trees are located along. The city is notable for its amazing architecture, reminiscent of Greek temples. There is no gloss in this city – it is quiet and calm here, a large selection of housing. For example, for 1000 rubles (per day) you can rent a decent hotel room here.
2. Telavi
This Georgian town is located in the valleys of the Alazani and Iori rivers. It is a center of winemaking, which is elevated to a cult in Georgia. Telavi always transforms, becomes more beautiful and nobler, the center has been restored: many buildings, the Batonistsikhe fortress and Yerekli II square. Walking the streets is a pleasure, because they are clean and comfortable.
Travelers like Telavi, and residents speak well of the city. The city is convenient for trips around the surroundings, the distances are short – you can easily go to Sighnaghi, as well as Alaverdi, Nekresi, etc. There are few sights in the Georgian town, but there is something to see, for example, the Batonis-Tsikhe fortress, which was built under the king II in the XNUMXth century. If you are traveling around Telavi, be sure to check it out.
1. Zugdids
Zugdids – this is the land of ancient Colchis, but you can hardly call it interesting. The city is ordinary and even post-Soviet, but tourists find charm in this too! As in many Georgian cities, the main street here is named after Shota Rustaveli. Typical Zugdidi is the private sector and Soviet houses.
It is quiet here in the morning, but by ten o’clock it becomes more interesting when the market begins to work. Most often, tourists pass by on the way to Svaneti: the road here is not easy and long. What attracts attention is the palace of the local rulers of the century before last in Denmark, built in the XNUMXth century. Around there is a small park where you can have a good time. What else to see in Zugdidi? Definitely, Tobavarchkhili Lake, Enguri River, Rukh Fortress, Tsaishi Cathedral and more.
