The escalator has long become a familiar detail of the situation not only in the subway, but also in above-ground buildings and structures. Moreover, in Moscow, on Sparrow Hills, an escalator gallery functioned “by itself”, laid right along the alley. It led from the Leninskiye Gorki metro station up to Moscow State University and the observation deck. Now this gallery, alas, is destroyed and nothing remains of the escalator.
I wonder which metro escalators at different times were considered the longest in the world?
10 Parliament Station, Melbourne (61m)
Parliament station in Melbourne (Australia) in general, an interesting subway construction. The waiting room is located on the upper level, while the boarding platforms are located on two different levels below.
This layout is due to the fact that the station is a hub. At two different levels, four threads of the path intersect here, leading in two cross directions.
This layout has meant that the escalator, which allows passengers to ascend from the lower level of the platforms to the surface, is over 60 meters long.
Interesting fact: the ticket office building was built “in reverse”: first, wells were drilled from the surface, which, after concreting, became support pillars. Then they dug a small pit from above and gradually began to concrete the horizontal levels. This made it possible to limit the work at street level to a minimum fence, which was of fundamental importance in the tightness of the city.
9. Wheaton Station, Washington (70 m)
Escalator that lifts passengers of the Washington subway to the surface, exiting the Wheaton station, not only the longest in the US.
This mechanical staircase holds the record for the entire Western Hemisphere.
The trick is that the 70-meter-long escalator is continuous – there are no transfer platforms along its length. The Wheaton station escalators are quite steep, with 70 meters of length there are as many as 35 meters of ascent to the surface.
Interesting fact: Wheaton’s neighboring Forest Glen station, the deepest in Washington (60 meters), has no escalators at all. Passengers have to be content with huge elevators.
8. Station Namesti Miru, Prague (87 m)
Place the World Station (Peace Square) is quite young. It was opened in 1978 and completely rebuilt in the early 90s.
The station is located deeper than all stations in the European Union – 53 meters. Such a deep location required the construction of an escalator of appropriate parameters.
Multi-platform mechanical ladders are 87 meters long.
7. Station Park Pobedy, Moscow (130 m)
The next four champions are located in Russia. For example, Moscow metro station Park Pobedy has escalator tracks 130 meters long.
The need for escalators of such a significant length is associated with a rather large depth of laying the station. Official sources report that the base mark is “-73 meters”.
Interesting fact: Park Pobedy station is officially considered the deepest station of the Moscow metro.
6. Chernyshevskaya station, St. Petersburg (131 m)
Leningrad is famous for the traditions of “the best”. Not only did Peter I bother to build a fortress and a shipyard in uninhabited, marshy places. So after all, the place turned out to be really strategic! And the city of Peter the Great, gradually growing, felt the need to build a subway.
The trouble is that swampy and very “floating” soils force tunnels to be dug at a considerable depth. It is not surprising that in our ranking of the “most-most escalators”, the City of Petra takes three honorary prizes.
Name station Chernyshevskaya may be misleading. Its exit to the surface, indeed, is located near Chernyshevsky Avenue. However, the name of the station is precisely this: “Chernyshevskaya”, which is reflected on the pediment. The escalators of this station are 131 meters long.
Interesting fact: it was at this station that for the first time in the history of Soviet metro construction, indirect lighting (with masked lamps) was used.
5. Lenin Square Station, St. Petersburg (131,6 m)
Feature station Ploshchad Lenina is that it was built in a single architectural project with Chernyshevskaya station and the image of the reconstruction of the Finland Station.
The depth of the station is rather big (and one of the record in the Baltic basin – 67 meters). As a result, escalators about 132 meters long had to be equipped to access the surface.
4. Admiralteyskaya station, St. Petersburg (137,4 m)
The next St. Petersburg record holder is metro station Admiralteyskaya. The length of its escalators is approximately 138 meters. Quite a young station, opened only in 2011.
Deep station. The base mark of 86 meters is a record for the St. Petersburg metro and, in general, brings the station to the top ten in terms of depth in the world. This is due, of course, to the close proximity of the station to the mouth of the Neva and the peculiarity of weak soils.
Interesting fact: in the period from 1997 to 2011, it was formally commissioned, but did not have a stopping point. Subway trains passed it without stopping.
3. Umeda, Osaka (173 m)
What are we all about the subway, but about the subway? In Japan, in the city Osaka, you can meet such a wonderful miracle as an escalator, slowly elevating the visitor to a height of 173 meters!
Miraculous stairs are located inside the two towers of the Umeda Sky Building commercial complex, built in 1993.
Actually, the length of the escalators significantly exceeds the indicated 173 meters, since they lead from level to level on the way to the top – the famous “air garden”.
But the owner of the structure, in response to a question about the total length of mechanical stairs, only squints maliciously (purely in Japanese).
2. Enshi, Hubei (688 m)
Still, no subway station and no shopping complex have the ability to “surpass” ground-based structures on a scale.
The Chinese built not only the longest stone wall on the planet. They did not hesitate to build one of the longest escalators on the planet for the sake of tourists.
Escalator in Enshi National Park (Hubei Province) has an impressive length of 688 meters. At the same time, it elevates visitors to the national park to a height of about 250 meters.
Interesting fact: despite the fact that the escalator line is considered continuous, in fact it consists of a dozen separate segments. The reason for this is the curved line of the escalator, which resembles the Latin letter “S” in plan.
1. Central-Mid-Levels Escalator, Гонконг (800 м)
Of course, no escalator other than a street escalator could be the champion in length among escalator systems.
So it is – get acquainted: the escalator “Average transplant“(this is how you can freely translate the original name of the building”Central Mid Levels Escalator“).
This is a complex of interconnected escalator systems right in the middle of the Hong Kong anthill. It is no longer a tourist attraction, but part of the urban infrastructure.
Arranged in several tiers, chains of escalators provide a continuous bi-directional movement of visitors over a distance of more than 800 meters.
Interesting fact: More than 60 citizens use the services of the escalator complex daily.
