Despite the overall size and size of passenger traffic, the metro is not the most common mode of transport in the world. The reason for this was that not every city can afford the laying and maintenance of such a giant colossus.
The largest in Russia is the Moscow metro. The saving subway enables citizens to overcome significant distances in a relatively short period of time. But few people think about what resources the construction cost the city. But this is both geo-exploration, and serious earthworks (including digging tunnels), and laying communications and paths.
Some stations are located very deep underground, and sometimes directly under water bodies. Can you imagine what exact calculations and substantial costs it takes to build deep stations and install escalators there?
So, the length of escalators is measured mainly by the depth of the stations. And today we dedicate the review to the Moscow metro stations, which are champions in many respects. Among them are the longest, the most beautiful, and also the busiest.
Well, we give a list of the longest escalators in the Moscow metro below.
10 VDNH – 53,5 m
The station is located on the border of two districts (Alekseevsky and Ostankinsky). It was first opened in May 1958 and was part of the gap “Peace Avenue” and “VSHV(now known to us as VDNKh).
The project is characterized by three pillar vaults (18 pcs.). There is only one island platform.
It is noteworthy that at the time of construction, it was the deepest metropolitan metro station with the longest escalator.
The VDNKh project was laid by the famous Moscow architects Cherepanov, Taranov and Bykova. As for decoration, the walls of the station have only rounded cast lattices and classic crystal pendant chandeliers. The pylons are richly decorated with marble and have metal decor.
Guests of the city can wait for a fast train, sitting on comfortable marble benches and admiring the arches (one has moldings in the form of oak leaves, and the other has a Gzhel panel and chic columns).
9. Dmitrovskaya – 59 m
Station Dmitrovskaya was laid down and opened to passengers in March 1991. The design is classic pylon with 3 vaults and an island platform. It is noteworthy that some pylons have not been fully opened due to the specific geological setting.
The walls and the hall are lined with expensive red marble. Also, passengers and guests of the capital can admire cast bas-reliefs depicting scenes on the theme of the defense of Moscow.
8. Marxist – 60 m
Station Marxist got its name for a reason and is considered one of the oldest (opened in 1979). Under the influence of general Marxist sentiments and ideas, it received a memorable name, and even now no one plans to rename it – they are used to it.
The classic pylon station is decorated with marble in various shades of pink and red, which makes it themed with the color symbolism of Marxism. The island platform is consecrated with spiral fluorescent light bulbs, which are considered by many to be the legacy of a bygone era.
7. Sretensky Boulevard – 60 m
A rather young station, since it was opened only 12 years ago. It is remarkable not only for its depth, but also for the fact that it had its own exit from the platform only 8 years ago. Prior to that, it was necessary to reach neighboring stations, which many considered absurd. The fact is that the opening was postponed due to a lack of funds from the state.
Decorated Sretensky Boulevard according to a good tradition with light shades of marble. While waiting for the train, you can appreciate the creations of the artist Lubennikov.
6. Pipe – 60 m
This young station was also opened in 2007 along with Sretensky Boulevard. She became 173 in a row in the capital and one of the deepest. It has a traditional column-wall construction, with every 4th column replaced by a wall. This allows you to increase the margin of safety of such a deep station.
Interestingly, the build project Pipe The station was proposed back in the 30s, but apparently there were not enough funds or expediency. In the design you can see classic marble for stations, as well as attractive plastic umbrellas.
5. Petrovsko-Razumovskaya – 61 m
Station Petrovsko-Razumovskaya was opened in March 1991, but was not initially completed. The second hall, opened after 2014, was necessary for transferring to the neighboring line.
The design of the station was thought out by the famous architect Zurab Tsereteli. The cladding was made of classic white marble with veins in combination with red brick, which gave luxury and conviviality. The edges of the station are decorated with vases decorated with plaster flowers.
4. Dubrovka – 62 m
One of the most troublesome stations was finally put into operation in 1999. Built Dubrovka, which is remarkable, under closed factories that produce a significant amount of thermal energy.
To build the station, surveyors had to freeze groundwater. For more than 4 years, trains could not stop at this station, until the economic crisis came and the factories closed en masse.
Construction was resumed, thanks to which a column-wall station appeared (the columns stand on a concrete floor). The usual walls are decorated in light shades, and the floor is marble. Here you can admire the mosaic panels belonging to the legacy of Tsereteli.
3. Chekhovskaya – 62 m
This large metropolitan station was named after the famous Russian writer Chekhov and is designed to match the style of his works. So, in the center of the deep station there is a staircase that takes passengers to the neighboring Pushkinskaya, and a long escalator 62 meters deep leads to Tverskaya. Behind Chekhovskaya we also meet a dead end, which is used for parking metro trains at night.
2. Timiryazevskaya – 63,5 m
famous station Timiryazevskaya with one of the longest escalators was opened in the same significant year 1991. She is a record holder – that is, the only metropolitan station that has one arch. Outwardly, it looks like a concrete monolith, under which there are railway tracks and, of course, a traditional island platform. The station is faced rather modestly: it is ordinary marble and columns with beautiful forged flowers.
1. Victory Park – 84 m (126 m – the length of the escalator)
One of the most famous stations, the length of the escalator in which is 126 meters, while the depth of the station itself is 84 meters. It was opened relatively recently – in May 2003, although it was originally planned to be launched back in 2000. As always, the state did not have enough funds for construction.
The height of the escalator is 63 meters, that is, from a long and sharp rise at first it can become dreary. The station was built according to the author’s design by Shurygina and Shumakov.
Feature Victory Park is a thematic design in the style of Patriotic Wars. The station has 2 halls, which are lined with granite in various colors (gray, red and black). The arch is decorated with author’s panels from the greatest master Tsereteli.
Yes, with such a length of escalators, you can safely turn on an audiobook and enjoy the measured movement, looking at the faces of Muscovites who are always in a hurry. On the other hand, you can spend time studying the architecture of the stations and its cladding, because this is quite entertaining.
