Crimea – the Crimean peninsula – is located between the Black and Azov seas. Due to its location, flora and fauna, climate and culture, it has long and firmly taken its place among the most popular tourist destinations. One of the biggest attractions is the mountains.
The mountains of Crimea are several mountain ranges combined into one structure. They are not high, lower than the mountains of the Caucasus, but one of the oldest on the planet (formed 200 million years ago). They are all varied and beautiful. Because of their strange shapes, many beautiful myths and mysterious legends have been walking around these places for a long time.
The mountains have long been a local landmark, because it is simply impossible not to fall in love with them. Tourists come both just to admire and try to conquer these peaks. In this article we will consider the highest mountains in Crimea.
10 Eklizi-Burum, 1527 m
Church-Burum – one of the most famous hills in the Crimea. It has become popular among tourists due to its accessibility. It is easily accessible by transport. Due to its small size, the routes to conquer this mountain last less than a day.
Nature here does not shine with diversity, a cold wind is constantly blowing, so even in summer the temperature is quite low. The mountain becomes much more dangerous during the winter. You can’t get to it with the help of lifts, they simply don’t exist. To get to the top you have to hold on tightly to the rocks. From the very top you can see Sevastopol, Simferopol and Alushta.
9. Kemal-Egerek, 1530 m
Kemal-Egerek – this is the highest point of the Yalta Yayla. She loses only 15 meters to the highest mountain. In Tatar, its name means “the place where Kemal drives the sheep“. Vegetation pleases the eye only in summer, but there are very picturesque mountain rivers.
This peak is a watershed of two rivers: Kaspan and Donga. Not far from its highest point there is a tourist area, and nearby you can find a captured spring. Many note that this peak commemorates the Carpathians both in view and landscapes.
8. Nameless peak on the Gurzuf Yayla, 1536 m
Gurzuf Yayla – the second highest yayla in the Crimea. She also has a middle name “Balaban-Kaya”, which in Russian simply means “big mountain“. It is located among the Main Ridge of the Crimean Mountains. Once upon a time there was a Taurus sanctuary on this ridge, and later a temple stood there.
Now you can see only a few stones, indicating the importance of this place earlier. The nameless peak is rather even a mound, which is separated from another peak (Demir-Kapu). Between them there is a small hollow. And since they are very close, the name of this peak is not on any tourist map.
7. Zeytin-Kosh, 1537 m
Zeytin-Kosh – rises right in the middle of Babugan. Tourists who climb it have the most magnificent view. She is sharper than her sisters. In translation “Zeytin-Kosh” means “olive grazing of sheep. There is a legend that an olive garden used to grow on this peak, but it is difficult for travelers to imagine this, because, having risen, they see only a wasteland.
At the moment, the area there is almost completely devoid of vegetation. Often come across except that wolf berries. It is forbidden to conquer it without permission and accompaniment, since it is located on the territory of the natural reserve of Crimea.
6. Tas-Tepe, 1538 m
Tas-Tepe, like all the mountains on the Babugan plateau, is completely treeless. The flora is very scarce on the peaks themselves, but in the lower parts of the mountains it is magnificent.
Many tourists come here just to look at the whole carpets of flowers. This is an insanely beautiful sight – glades full of beautiful delicate mountain flowers.
It turns out so due to the fact that water is easy to linger. After all, the entire surface consists of holes, cracks and depressions. For the same reason, these peaks are considered difficult for climbers. Travelers are warned that there is a huge danger of getting stuck in one of the failures, so you need to be extremely careful.
5. Uchurum-Kaya, 1538 m
My case is Kaya – a mountain located on the Babugan plateau. “Babugan” in translation into Russian means “Belladonna”. The entire yayla was named after this plant because it is the most commonly seen plant. This is the only plant that you will find along the entire ridge in large numbers.
Mount Uchurum-Kaya is very similar to Tas-Tepe. Far from the most popular tourist destination. Many tourist routes only touch it by the edge, or go through it, but almost no one climbs just for the sake of this peak.
4. Demir-Kapu, 1541 m
Demir-Kapu – a peak that is only 4 meters behind the highest, for which it has become an item on the list of almost every climber. The top has a conical shape. Here, unlike the Babugan plateau, the diversity of nature is widely represented. You can see about a thousand species of plants that are considered relic and about 500 included in the Red Book.
Demir-Kapu is considered one of the most beautiful mountains of Crimea. But the ascent does not depend on picturesqueness, so it remains as difficult as on other mountains. Climbing to the top can be done at any time of the year, but, in any case, it is better to conquer this mountain with a guide so as not to overshadow your journey with troubles along the way.
3. Valentine, 1541 m
Unlike Demir-Kapu, Valentine located on Babugan. You can make a mistake if you think that Mount Uchurum-Kaya and Mount Valentina are one and the same. But these are two completely different peaks, which are located on opposite sides of the hiking trail.
There is an opinion that this mountain was named quite recently, because the name is too out of the usual for these places. And also because it is not marked on any official map, and its name can be found only on some sites.
2. Boynus Tepe, 1542 m
Boynus-Tepe – a peak on the northern side of Babugan. She is inferior in everything to her neighbor – Roman-Kosh. Although the landscapes that open from it are no less bewitching. Together with other objects of the reserve, this peak is guarded, so some rules must be observed there, but it is better not to go there without the support of a guide.
The place is very popular, so there are many options to visit. Many tourist routes have been laid through it, but the most popular are the routes to Roman-Kosh.
1. Roman-Kosh, 1545 m
Roman-Kosh – this is the highest point of the Crimean mountains. From its top you can see the forest of the reserve, Simferopol, Bakhchisarai and the sea, but very, very far away, because the mountain is located in the very north of the yayla. The summit does not have a pointed peak, it looks like a big hill on a plateau high in the mountains. Its only difference from its neighbors is the cross at the very top.
The title has many translations. “supreme peace“,”forest pasture of shepherds”, “upper halt”- all these are the names of the highest point of Crimea. In summer, many tourist groups set off to conquer this place. There are many ways to get there, some routes suggest doing it in a day, but most often Roman-Kosh becomes a point in the string of a multi-day trip.
Crimea immediately conquers with its beauty, landscape and nature. Once arrived and fell in love, it is already impossible to forget.
