The first films in the fantasy genre appeared in the early 80s. Usually, these are adaptations of books or comics, but there are films that were shot entirely according to a fictional script. And among those and others there are many high-quality creations. We have selected for you the top 10 fantasy films that are a must-see for every cinephile or lover of good cinema.
10 Lemony Snicket: 33 misfortunes | Fees: $208
The top 10 fantasy films are opened by an incredibly atmospheric, and at the same time, tragic story about orphans Klaus, Violet and Sunshine. Their parents died, and the closest relative is the guardian Count Olaf. In his house, the children became even more unhappy. Olaf makes them clean the rooms, cook, serve his friends. But these are “flowers”, compared with future misfortunes …
The film, based on the books by Lemony Snicket, was conceived as the beginning of a grandiose story about three orphans. But, the fees at the box office put an end to the plans of the producers. Not the last role in this was played by the huge budget of the picture at that time – 140 million dollars.
Film critics appreciated the unusual story and gave her a well-deserved Oscar for makeup. Jim Carrey is really unrecognisable, and the villain from him turned out to be amazing.
9. Brothers Grimm | Fees: $105
The film follows the adventures of the world-famous Grimm brothers before they started writing fairy tales. And the guys were engaged in deception of the villagers. They came to a certain locality, where they told people that they were threatened by a witch or a troll. For money, the brothers eliminated a non-existent monster and received a reward. This went on for quite a long time, until they met with real evil spirits …
Heath Ledger and Matt Damon were originally supposed to play completely opposite roles, but when they read the script, they decided to switch the characters of the film. And they did it right. Their brothers turned out to be very lively and interesting. And the villain in the face of Monica Belucci will long remain in the viewer’s memory. For a mysterious atmosphere, interesting characters and a strong script – 9th place in our top fantasy films.
8. Stardust | Fees: $135
A young man named Tristan promised his girlfriend that he would get her a fallen star from the sky. In search of a celestial body, the guy gets over the wall that separates the world of people from a parallel universe. He has a difficult but interesting path ahead of him.
A kind and atmospheric fairy tale climbed so high in the top fantasy films for a reason. She earned popular love among viewers, thanks to an incredibly captivating story, brilliantly selected actors and a fantastic soundtrack by composer Ilan Eshkeri.
7. Jumanji | Fees: $262
The picture tells about the game “Jumanji”, which has supernatural powers. The boy Alan accidentally discovered her in the attic, decided to play and was transported to the jungle. His friends had to make great efforts to free the guy from captivity. Now, in order to get rid of the powerful game, the guys have to either go through it to the end, or lose.
One of the best roles of Robin Williams, 12-year-old Kirsten Dunst and an incredible script. Jumanji has become a cult family film, it is shown on TV every New Year’s holidays, and each time the viewer discovers something new in the picture. The best fantasy movie of the 90s!
6. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe | Fees: $745
Four children are sent away from the war to the village to a family friend. There, the guys, playing hide-and-seek, discover an old wardrobe through which you can get into the fairy-tale land of Narnia.
The film, which is included in the fantasy top, is based on the book of the same name by Clive Stiles Lewis. From the pen of this writer came seven creations about Narnia, but the producers began to film the books from the second. At the moment, three films about this universe have been shot, but it is the first one that is the most beloved by the audience. This is probably due to the kind family atmosphere that permeates the film from beginning to end. And Tilda Swinton as the Snow Queen will long remain in the memory of viewers of all ages.
5. Edward Scissorhands | Fees: $86
Incredibly touching story about a young man named Edward, who is an experiment of one scientist. The guy has no hands, and instead of them, the inventor attached scissors. Now Edward is forced to live alone in an old mansion, counting down the days until his death. But one day he meets a girl…
From the first minutes one can guess the signature style of Tim Burton. All his films are made in the Gothic style. And this picture is no exception. She is rightfully called one of the best. And the main character performed by Johnny Depp is able to bring tears to even the most persistent viewers.
For the atmosphere and excellent acting, our 5th place in the top fantasy films.
4. Alice in Wonderland | Fees: $1
Screen version of Lewis Carroll’s fairy tale about a girl Alice, who accidentally got through a tunnel into a fairy-tale land.
Another story from Tim Burton. And again, Johnny Depp in one of the roles. It was one of the first films made in 3D format, so the excitement for the picture was great. But this does not mean that the film did not deserve such a large box office. Quite the opposite: a well-chosen cast, modern special effects and colorful characters of the picture will forever be remembered by viewers from all over the world. Probably, even the writer himself would not be against such a film adaptation of his creation. Deserved 4th place in the top fantasy films.
3. Pirates of the Caribbean | Fees: $3
The tetralogy of fearless pirates has long gained popularity all over the world. Each film is like a work of art: polished dialogues, special effects polished to the smallest detail, and, of course, bright acting roles. Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow is my favorite. Besides him, no one could have portrayed a cheerful pirate: his gait, mannerisms, style of dress. The first three parts complement each other, it seems that this is one big film. The fourth is out of rhythm and atmosphere of the previous paintings, but that does not make it any less interesting. And next year, the fifth part of the Pirates, which won the bronze of the top fantasy films, will be released on the screens.
2. Harry Potter | Fees: $7
More than one generation of children has grown up on the saga of the young wizard. Millions of fans around the world, world-famous actors, almost billions of dollars in every film: that’s what this franchise boasts. The story of Harry Potter will be watched and reviewed for decades to come. As the “Boy Who Lived” and his fans grew older, the atmosphere of each picture changed from childish to darker. If you haven’t watched this saga yet, we advise you to see it for yourself. Deserved silver of the top fantasy films!
1. Lord of the Rings | $2,9 billion
Probably, for a long time no one will be able to intercept the title of the best fantasy film from The Lord of the Rings. The trilogy is an example of real high-quality cinema, not only in the fantasy genre, but in general in all. Peter Jackson did the unbelievable: the films are no worse than the books of John Tolkien’s master of the pen. And somewhere even better! Masterpiece Oscar-winning trilogy first place in the top fantasy films!
The article will present the reader with the Top 10 fantasy films, from which, he will choose the picture he likes to his taste, and completely plunge into the fairy-tale world.
