10 Haze | 2007
A film based on Stephen King’s The Fog. The director was Frank Darabont, and the film was loved by many viewers for the unexpected ending of the film.
The story takes place within a supermarket where a group of shoppers are stuck. The fact is that a thick and impenetrable fog descended on the city, through which only frightening shadows of extraterrestrial organisms could be seen. People unanimously decided to wait out the fog and wait for the help of the authorities.
However, soon the people are covered with a wave of panic: someone wants to get out of the supermarket, someone starts Orthodox sermons, convincing frightened people that God’s punishment has come upon them, and someone is trying to think of ways to survive.
9. Exorcist | 1973
The film’s slogan says it’s the scariest movie of all time. In the center of the plot is a famous actress and her daughter. For unknown reasons, the girl begins to behave strangely and even intimidatingly. The mother tries to find help, turning first to the doctors, and then to the priest.
Doctors say that the girl is mentally ill, but they cannot determine the diagnosis and prescribe treatment. The priest is convinced that the devil has captured the girl’s body and offers a rite of exile.
8. Baby Rosemary | 1968
The film was directed by Roman Polanski, and the syllable of the film asks the viewer to pray for Rosemary’s child.
The plot revolves around the young Wodehouse family who are trying to have a baby, but all their attempts are unsuccessful. Then Rosemary and her husband Guy decide to move to Bramford for a change of scenery. In their new home, they quickly become acquainted with neighbors who obsessively offer their company and friendship.
Soon Rosemary has a dream in which her husband, possessed by the devil, rapes his wife. A few days later, the girl finds out that she is pregnant, and she begins to classify her neighbors as a satanic cult.
7. From dusk to dawn | 1995
A film by Robert Rodriguez starring George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino. The story of the film revolves around two brothers who rob a bank and then, hiding from the police, take a priest and his family hostage.
Having escaped to the American border, the brothers decide to spend the night at a nearby motel, but all they see is a bar. Bloodthirsty action begins in the bar when one of the brothers decides to start a fight with the regulars of the establishment.
6. Misery | 1990
Another film based on the work of the same name by Stephen King. The main roles in the film were played by the inimitable Kathy Bates and James Caan.
Caan played the writer, Paul Sheldon, who was famous for stories about Misery’s girlfriend. However, the writer was so tired of the image of Misery that in the last book he kills his character in order to start a new story with characters that are interesting to him.
One day, Sheldon gets into a strong snowstorm and crashes in his car. He regains consciousness in an unfamiliar house, but does not remember how and who saved him.
The owner of the house, Annie Wilks, is a longtime fan of Sheldon’s books, and most of all she loved the heroine Misery, whom the writer killed not so long ago in his book.
5. Dracula | 1992
This film can be considered a cult film just because of the cast: Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Anthony Hopkins and Keanu Reeves.
The events of the film take place at the end of the 19th century and tell the viewer about a young couple. Jonathan loves his fiancee very much, but is forced to temporarily leave her because of work in Transylvania. After all, a certain Count Dracula wants to buy a home in London, and Jonathan, as a young lawyer, agrees to advise him.
Of course, the viewer knows perfectly well who the famous count is, however, Jonathan does not even know who he will have to meet soon.
4. Nightmare on Elm Street | 1984
This film is scary even with one of its ideas: to be locked in your own dream and try to escape in it from a bloodthirsty maniac. Even rare nightmares affect the human psyche, what can we say about constantly recurring nightmares?
High school students are haunted by a dream in which a mutilated man is chasing them and trying to kill them. Soon the students realize that if a maniac kills them in their dreams, they will die in reality. Children have only a few sleepless nights to figure out how to escape from the maniac chasing them.
3. Radiance | 1980
Stephen King, Stanley Kubrick and Jack Nicholson are a good set to create a cult horror movie. And therefore, even 40 years later, the scenes from this film make the blood freeze in the veins.
The story takes place on the grounds of a secluded hotel where Jack Torrance comes to work as a caretaker. Together with Jack, his wife and son settle in the hotel.
Torrance is sure that he had never seen this hotel before, and even more so he had never lived in it. However, the nightmarish reality soon greatly surprises the man.
2. Sleepy Hollow | 1999
Sleepy Hollow is directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp.
The story tells about the small town of Sleepy Hollow, in which a series of mysterious murders began. All victims are decapitated by the headless horseman’s sword, and Ichabod Crane must find the killer. Of course, before that, making sure that the headless horseman is not a local fairy tale, but a real terrible reality.
1. Alien | 1979
As you know, no sound is heard in outer space. Therefore, the slogan of the film evokes horror, arguing that in space no one will hear our screams.
The time period of the film is the distant future, in which people freely travel through space with scientific expeditions.
One day, returning from a mission to Earth, the ship’s pilots pick up a signal from an unidentified planet. Following onboard instructions, the crew landed on an unknown planet in search of the source of the signal.
But they find only mysterious black cocoons, which at first glance do not pose any danger. But this is only at first sight.
