History knows many women whom many consider great. Their life path is almost a ready-made script for a movie, so it’s no surprise that biopics are so popular.
Today we will not talk about the pictures about famous women themselves, but about the actresses who played them, and we will consider those cases when several actresses tried on the same image.
10 Romy Schneider: Jessica Schwartz and Marie Baumer
Actress Rosemary Magdalena Albach, better known as Romy Schneider, is one of the most attractive film divas of the last century (she is put on a par with Marlene Dietrich).
They wanted to transfer her story to the big screen literally from the moment of her death in 1983, but the first serious picture was the 2009 TV movie, where her image was embodied by Jessica Schwartz.
A full-fledged film was shot after 9 years, and Marie Baumer was called for the title role.
9. Camille Claudel: Isabelle Adjani and Juliette Binoche
Camille Claudel is one of the most famous female sculptors, whose talent was ruined by a mental disorder and relatives who hid her in a hospital.
Doctors were repeatedly ready to discharge the woman, but the family insisted time after time that she be left under the supervision of doctors. Because of this, Claudel spent 30 years in the hospital until her death in 1943.
The image of an artist with a tragic fate was first tried on by Isabelle Adjani in 1988, receiving an Oscar nomination for this, and 25 years later, another diva of French cinema, Juliette Binoche, played the role of Camille. The second film went unnoticed, although it was still nominated for small awards.
8. Donatella Versace: Gina Gershon and Penelope Cruz
The Italian, who revived the family business and returned popularity to the Versace fashion house, is mentioned in many films, but this character received major roles only in two: “The House of Versace” in 2013 and the anthology series “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”.
In the first, the role of a fashionable diva was played by Gina Gershon, who not only got used to the image, but also, thanks to the work of the make-up artists, became very similar to the real prototype.
Penelope Cruz, who played in the series, outwardly has nothing to do with the real Donatella, but this cannot be called a frank minus, since the actress diluted the image with her color.
7. Edith Piaf: Marion Cotillard and Evelyn Bui
If a fan of the great French singer’s work is asked to name a film about this woman, then he will surely remember the 2007 Life in Rose, where the image of Edith was embodied by Marion Cotillard.
The tape turned out to be good, Cotillard even received an Oscar for it, but it is not the only one and not the first: in 1983, director Claude Lelouch made the film “Edith and Marcel” with Evelyn Bui in the title role. This film was not about the creative path of Edith Piaf, but about her relationship with the boxer Marcel Cerdan.
6. Coco Chanel: Audrey Tautou and Barbora Bobulova
Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel had a huge impact on the fashion of the 20th century, founding a world famous brand. Her story was first told by the television movie Coco Chanel in 2008, in which Barbora Bobulova played the young fashion designer, and Shirley MacLaine played the old fashion designer, who received a number of awards and nominations.
A year later, a tape with the same name was released, but already shown in cinemas and starring Audrey Tautou. Her work, like the film itself, was rated quite highly, which brought fees of $ 50 million and several prestigious awards, including the Oscar for best costumes.
5. Margaret Thatcher: Meryl Streep and Lindsay Duncan
The first woman prime minister of Great Britain (and in general the first woman to hold such a post in a European country) deserves more than anyone else to have her story told and retold.
Meryl Streep managed to embody her image on the screen best of all in the 2011 film The Iron Lady, while Thatcher was still alive. The actress herself received her third Oscar for this role, and the picture was awarded the statuette for best make-up.
However, this is not the only biopic: two years earlier, the film “Margaret” with Lindsey Duncan was released on British television.
4. Princess Diana: Amy Seccombe and Naomi Watts
The life of one of the greatest women in British history (in 2002, the BBC conducted a poll, according to which the people placed her in 3rd place among the hundred greatest Britons in history) was tragically cut short in 1997.
After 2 years, a film dedicated to her was released on TV, where the little-known actress Amy Sekcomb played the main role.
A larger project about the princess was filmed in 2013, calling the more eminent Naomi Watts for the lead role. The ambitious project eventually failed: critics scolded it, the audience did not approve of it, it did not receive awards and did not earn money at the box office.
3. Jacqueline Kennedy: Natalie Portman and Katie Holmes
The role of the most famous first lady of the United States was first tried on by Katie Holmes in the 2011 mini-series The Kennedy Clan. The show itself received average ratings, but even the most zealous critics noted that Holmes bears some portrait resemblance to the real Jacqueline.
More successful was the film “Jackie” in 2016, becoming one of the discoveries of that year and reminding everyone of the talent of Natalie Portman.
2. Elizabeth Taylor: Sherilyn Fenn and Helena Bonham Carter
The actress, who has become the personification of Hollywood in the middle of the 20th century, has always attracted attention, not only with her acting talent and beauty (although she does not care about this), but also with her lifestyle.
A lot of novels and marriages (the actress went down the aisle with 8 men 7 times), as well as a turbulent youth – isn’t this a great story for a biopic?
The picture “Liz: The Elizabeth Taylor Story” with the star of “Twin Peaks” Sherilyn Fenn received mixed reviews, which can not be said about the much-praised tape “Burton and Taylor” with Helena Bonham Carter.
1. Marilyn Monroe: Mira Sorvino and Michelle Williams
Mira Sorvino and Michelle Williams are not the most famous actresses, although the latter was nominated for an Oscar 4 times. Both of them are completely different from the legendary blonde Monroe, but they were chosen for the main roles in two of the most famous films about the life of Marilyn.
Sorvino played her in Norma Jean and Marilyn in 1996, and Williams in 7’s 2011 Days and Nights with Marilyn.
