In 2018, a huge number of high-budget projects appeared on the screens, among which there are both frankly failed films and those that exceeded expectations. Today we will look at the top ten blockbusters, in which we will mention both categories, because if the film did not do well at the box office or it was smashed to smithereens by critics, is this really a reason to refuse to watch it? Maybe you’ll be the one to fall in love with it, who knows.
10 Han Solo. Star Wars Tales
The second full-length spin-off of the film saga is interesting primarily for its excellent cast, especially Donald Glover, who, it seems, was simply born for the role of Lando Calrissian. Alden Ehrenreich, who played Han Solo himself, looks less convincing, but still this role cannot be called an outright failure, which cannot be said about the fees. The studio spent about 275 million dollars on production, earning less than 400 million worldwide, that is, in fact, without even recouping the investment, not to mention the profit. At the same time, “Stories” has mostly positive reviews, so it’s definitely worth watching.
9. “Black Panther”
The most tolerant superhero film turned out to be twofold: on the one hand, it is praised for its good visuals (Marvel has no other way), and on the other hand, it is scolded for sterility and plot stupidity. Be that as it may, Black Panther is still one of the biggest hits of the year: an impressive $200 million budget brought in $1.3 billion, and the film was also included in the list of the 10 best films of 2018 according to the American Film Institute.
8. “Jurassic World 2”
The 2015 sequel with Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard in the lead roles proved to be more successful at the box office: the audience brought $ 1.3 billion into the creators’ piggy bank, repeatedly increasing their investments. According to the plot, on the island of Nublar, inhabited by dinosaurs, a volcano awakens, the eruption of which threatens their extinction (repeated). Claire Dearing, along with trainer Owen, want to save them, but their plans go against the intentions of very powerful people. As always, the viewer is waiting for stunning special effects and graphics, and the plot is very even on the level.
7. “Pacific Rim 2”
Another ambitious project that ultimately fell short of the studio’s expectations. Collecting less than 300 million at a cost of ~160 is a failure, but for the end viewer, these numbers are not so important. The film turned out to be dynamic, the picture pleases the eye, and the plot does not “blow up the brain” with its absurdity. If for some reason you missed Pacific Rim 2, you still have time before the end of the year to catch up.
6. “Rampage”
This is a story about a mutagen that, having fallen to earth from an orbiting space station, turns several animals into huge monsters. Only a gorilla named George remains peaceful thanks to his primatologist friend Davis, played by Dwayne Johnson. Now they have to save millions of human lives, clearly proving how close the connection between man and animal can be.
5. “Ant-Man and the Wasp”
The sequel to the 2015 superhero blockbuster with beloved characters. Charming Scott Lang is serving a house arrest for a run-in at the airport while helping Captain America. At this time, Hank Pym and his daughter are working on a device that will help them bring Janet Van Dyne back from the quantum world, but, of course, everything does not go according to plan. The second part turned out to be bigger and better than the original, although the characters remained the same: the grumpy Hank, the sharp-tongued Hope, and the stupid but selfless Scott. The latter needs to do several things at once: return the location of Pim and Hope, who are angry with him for stealing the suit, and also calmly “see out” his term and not fall into the clutches of the FBI.
4. “Avengers: Infinity War”
The main Marvel crossover, which will be very, very difficult to surpass in terms of dramaturgy and overall quality. Due to the abundance of characters, the plot turned out to be a little crumpled, but this can be understood: if each character was given enough screen time, then the timing would be huge. The blockbuster set several records at the same time in terms of collections, the amount of which exceeded $ 2 billion. This allowed “War of Infinity” to take 4th place in the list of the highest grossing films in history. The fight against Thanos will continue in the second, final part, but for now, you can build theories about which of the Avengers will survive.
3. “Predator”
This project turned out to be completely different from its predecessors from the “predatory” universe. There is not the seriousness here that was in the original with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and there is not that level of “tin” that was in the crossovers with Aliens. Oddly enough, 2018’s Predator is a comedy replete with below-the-belt jokes. Not all viewers liked this treatment of the franchise, so the planned sequels are temporarily frozen.
2. “Aquaman”
Despite the fact that DC is outright losing the overall race for audience love to Marvel, in 2018 they still managed to slightly rehabilitate themselves thanks to Aquaman. Arthur Curry’s solo album turned out exactly the way they wanted to see it: light, beautiful and dynamic. The graphics, for which previous DC films were scolded, are made according to all the rules: the underwater world is striking in its realism, and the battles are breathtaking. Separately, it is worth noting the game of Jason Momoa, who really revealed himself here both as a comedic actor and as a master of action.
1. “Ready Player One”
The action of the picture takes place in 2045, where the world, according to the laws of the genre, is on the verge of disaster. Mankind is running away from reality into the virtual world of OASIS, the creator of which has hidden an “easter egg” inside it. Whoever finds it will become the owner of his colossal fortune, which is not such a weak motivator. This film is literally saturated with references to famous and beloved projects of the 80s – early 2000s. Here you can easily find nods to The Terminator, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Back to the Future and many other masterpieces. Steven Spielberg did his best, spending $ 175 million on the creation of the tape, which eventually brought in almost 600 million.
