Tooth poisoning, called devitalization, is a procedure performed in a dentist’s office, which is one of the elements of root canal treatment. This is the first step to successfully heal a sick tooth. It turns out, however, that not everyone can have poisoned teeth. What is the devitalization procedure? We check whether it is safe for health and what it looks like in the case of minor patients.
Tooth poisoning – what does the procedure look like?
Tooth poisoning is one of the older methods used in endodontics. The procedure consists in applying a paste or other devitalizing agent to the inflammation developing in the pulp of the tooth. The toxic substances penetrate deep into the tooth, slowly causing the tissue to die. This process may take up to 2-3 weeks, so the patient is put on a special dressing that covers the reamed tooth. After this time, the dentist can proceed to root canal treatment without even using anesthesia.
Tooth poisoning – is it safe?
When poisoning the tooth, paraformaldehyde paste is used, which is cytotoxic as well as mutagenic as it can lead to the formation of cancer cells. Besides, this substance is dangerous to neighboring tissues. It can lead to their necrosis. However, tooth poisoning is a much faster and more effective method for patients who have very advanced inflammation causing severe pain.
Tooth poisoning – an alternative
An alternative to tooth poisoning is extirpation, which consists in the complete removal of the pulp. The procedure is performed under anesthesia. After that, you can immediately proceed to the next stages of root canal treatment, including unblocking and filling them, and then placing the filling.
Tooth poisoning – how long does the tooth hurt after the procedure?
Short-term but intense pain may occur in patients who require devitalization of the vital pulp without anesthesia. Discomfort may also appear after a properly performed procedure, which is directly related to the action of the agent with paraformaldehyde. After the tooth is poisoned and the dressing applied, you cannot eat for about two hours. It is very important to harden the dressing so that it is tight. Otherwise, another visit to the dentist will be indicated. It is also a good idea to get painkillers to help relieve pain after the anesthetic (if given) stops working.
Tooth poisoning in children and pregnant women
Devitalization is a popular procedure used in pediatric dentistry. This is related to the fear of the youngest about administering anesthesia in a syringe. As with adults, the dentist may switch to root canal treatment. Pregnant women may also have a tooth poisoned, but this is not recommended during the first and third trimesters.
Tooth poisoning – price
The price of tooth poisoning ranges from PLN 100 to PLN 200 depending on the dentist’s office where we decided to perform the procedure. The cost of complete root canal treatment depends on how many root canals the sick tooth has. Usually, filling each subsequent root is cheaper.
