Vitamin D levels and the risk of death from COVID-19

According to the authors of a randomized study on a group of over half a thousand people, calcifediol deficiency promotes the development of thrombosis as well as a cytokine storm, and as a consequence may cause inflammation in the lungs and lead to death.

The study published on the medRxiv portal proves that among the subjects studied, the highest mortality occurred in patients with COVID-19, who had the lowest levels of vitamin D.

The authors indicated that these people accounted for about 10 percent. among all 550 respondents. In addition to the lowest levels of vitamin D, they suffered more often than other COVID-19 respondents from inflammation of the respiratory system. They were also treated more often in hospital.

Vitamin D deficiency – more common in women

Mexican biologists have indicated that vitamin D may also be a marker of pulmonary epithelial infections, especially in people with high levels of vitamin D deficiency. They indicated that coronavirus-infected patients with levels of this vitamin equal to or lower than 12 ng / ml have a worse prognosis.

The study found that vitamin D deficiency is more common in hospitalized women. However, no relationship was found between the low concentration of this vitamin and the need for intubation of patients.

  1. The four chronic diseases that are most dangerous in COVID-19

The authors of the study indicated that in order to confirm the beneficial effects of vitamin D, in particular calcifediol, an additional randomized trial conducted on a larger group of people infected with coronavirus is necessary.
