Tomato Golden Domes is a tall determinant variety of Siberian selection. The plant is cold-resistant, adapted to sudden changes in temperature at the beginning of the growing season. Tomatoes are large-fruited, with high nutritional value, hypoallergenic. Fruiting is stable both in the greenhouse and in the open area. For many years, Golden Dome tomatoes have held a leading position in popularity among yellow-fruited varieties.
History of breeding
The tomato was created on the basis of the Siberian Garden agricultural firm, the originators were a group of scientific breeders led by V.N. Dederko. After experimental cultivation in a temperate continental climate, the Golden Domes variety was included in the State Register in 2005. The variety is included in the “Siberiada” series. The variety is recommended for cultivation in open ground (OG) and greenhouse conditions in the zone of risky farming.
Description of the tomato variety Golden Domes
Form a bush with two stems: the main and strong side shoots of the first order. In the OG, the height of the plant reaches 1 m, in the greenhouse 1,5 m. Golden Domes is a large-fruited varietal representative of the culture, adapted to the unstable weather of the Siberian and Ural regions.
The tomato is medium-late, the main ripening of fruits occurs 110 days after germination. Tomatoes do not ripen at the same time. The first fruits are removed from the lower brush in mid-August, the last – at the end of September. The fruits of technical ripeness fully ripen at home.
Golden Domes is a generative variety. After the plant reaches the end point of growth, nutrition is directed to the formation of fruits, and not to the growth of green mass. There are few stepchildren in the tomato, the foliage is average. The laying of the first fruit brush comes from the eighth leaf sinus, the subsequent ones grow in 2-3.
Biological characteristics:
- Tomato open type, stems of medium thickness, woody, fibrous, finely pubescent, brown.
- Leaf plates are pointed, with a corrugated surface and finely serrated edges. The leaves are medium-sized, compound, alternate, drooping.
- The flowers are small, bright orange.
- Fruit clusters are simple, consist of 3-6 ovaries, up to 6 pcs in a greenhouse on a stem, 3-4 pcs in OG.
- The root system is superficial, compact.
- The fruits are large from the first to the last bunch, of different weights, on the lower brushes can reach 700 g, on the middle ones – 400 g, on the final one – 200 g.
- The shape of the tomatoes is heart-shaped, ribbed in the region of the stalk, the main color background is yellow with red-orange areas on the sides and at the top.
- The pulp is fine-grained, juicy, yellow with 4-6 chambers. Seeds are small, few, light beige in color.
- The skin is thin. With a lack of moisture and lack of nutrition, it is prone to cracking.
Golden domes – lettuce tomato. Tasting score – 4,7 points out of 5 possible. The taste is sweet, without the presence of acid, but not bland. Nightshade aroma is weakly expressed.
Recommended for cultivation in home gardens and summer cottages. Transportability is poor, shelf life is not more than four days. Cultivation on an industrial scale is unprofitable.
Yellow fruits have a high concentration of carotene, sugars and lycopene.
Characteristics of tomato Golden domes
A feature of Siberian varieties is their high cold resistance. Tomato Golden Domes begins vegetation at a temperature of +4 0C. If the value is lower, growth stops but the plant does not die. In case of frost damage, it forms a replacement and quickly gains green mass. Weather conditions do not affect the timing of flowering.
Tomato yield Golden domes
There are few fruits on the bush. A good indicator is achieved due to the mass. One plant, formed by two stems, gives up to 4,5 kg. 1 m2 three tomatoes are planted.
Subject to the conditions of agricultural technology from 1 m2 take 12-14 kg.
Disease and pest resistance
During the experimental cultivation, the immunity of the tomato was repeatedly adjusted. Varietal representatives are less resistant to pests and diseases, but they benefit from taste.
The problems that vegetable growers face in the process of growing are the infection of the plant with a number of pathogens that cause: leaf mold, Fusarium wilt, late blight.
Good resistance in the Golden Domes variety is observed to tobacco mosaic, cladosporiosis and phomosis.
Of the insects in the exhaust gas, the whitefly parasitizes on the tomato, and the spider mite parasitizes in the greenhouses. If there is no nightshade planting nearby, the Colorado potato beetle is not afraid of tomatoes.
How to use
For long-term storage, the variety Golden Domes is not suitable. Use the tomato fresh or process immediately after harvest. The fruits are used to make ketchup, sauce, lecho, juice, puree. Include in baby food. You can salt in a cold way, the Golden Domes variety does not go for whole-fruit canning, the peel cracks after heat treatment.
Advantages and disadvantages of tomato Golden domes
The yellow variety has its advantages. Vegetable growers appreciate the Golden Dome tomato for its interesting color and pleasant taste.
Pros:
- stable yield;
- large-fruited;
- there is no need to constantly remove side shoots;
- high gastronomic assessment;
- does not cause allergies;
- cold resistance;
- adaptation to a sharp change in temperature;
- the possibility of using seeds collected from fruits on your site.
The disadvantages of Golden Dome tomato include poor resistance to a number of infections, a short shelf life, and a tendency to crack.
Peculiarities of growing
Like all Siberian varieties, Golden Domes are grown from seedlings. Sowing seeds is carried out in containers with a fertile substrate in mid-March:
- Furrows are made 1 cm deep, with an interval of 5 cm.
- The seeds are laid out, fall asleep, watered with Energen’s solution.
- From above, the container is covered with a film or glass, a temperature regime of +22 is created0 C.
- After germination, the covering material is removed and sixteen hours of illumination is provided to the tomato.
- At the stage of three leaves dive into separate containers.
They take it out to the site at the moment when the soil warms up to +140 C. This occurs around the end of April or mid-May.
A sunny area with neutral soil is taken under the Golden Domes tomato:
- The bed is dug up, complex fertilizer is applied.
- Holes are made so deep that the tomato is closed to the first circle of leaves.
- Placed at a distance of 40 cm, the row spacing is 50-60 cm.
- After planting, moisten abundantly, use only warm water.
Growing tomato Golden Domes:
- They loosen the aisle, remove weeds from the beds, raise the embankment higher and mulch.
- Irrigate based on rainfall. The soil should be constantly moist, but without stagnant water.
- Feed with a nitrogen-containing agent in early spring. Phosphorus and potassium are fertilized during fruit formation. When the tomato begins to ripen, superphosphate is added. Liquid organics can be given once every two weeks. 21 days before harvest, all fertilizing is stopped.
The stems are tied to a support as they grow. Remove the lower leaves and brushes from which the fruits were removed.
Pest and disease control
To prevent infections, before planting, seeds are treated with any antifungal agent, crop rotation is observed and all plant residues are removed from the site. The place reserved for tomatoes is dug up. This measure will help get rid of pests wintering in the soil. 10 days after planting the material in the ground, seedlings are treated with a copper-containing agent.
In case of fungal diseases, watering is reduced, the plant is sprayed with Hom. If signs of infection remain, Bordeaux mixture is used after two weeks.
Fusarium wilt is one of the most common diseases of the Golden Dome tomato. Manifested by yellowing and twisting of the lower leaves, then spreads to the entire crown, can lead to the death of the tomato.
In order to prevent the spread of soil fungus, the soil around the plant is treated with copper sulphate, the affected areas are cut off, the tomato is spudded and sprayed with Maxim KS.
Phytophthora Golden domes get sick less often, the infection affects not only the green mass, but also the fruits.
At the first sign, they are treated with “Barrier”, with a clear defeat with “Oxychome”.
The whitefly causes great harm to tomatoes. It is located on the underside of the leaves. Leaf plates turn yellow, then holes appear. A fungus develops in places where insect waste accumulates. The areas turn black, the spores spread rapidly, also covering the fruits.
The spider mite is a sucking insect. It feeds on the juice of tomato leaves, localized on the lower part.
To get rid of the spider mite, the Iskra Bio bush is treated.
Conclusion
Tomato Golden domes of medium late ripening. The variety is grown in the Urals in the Central regions, in Siberia and the Far East. Tomatoes are large-fruited, with good taste, juicy. Due to the yellow pigment (carotenoid) they do not cause allergies, they are suitable for baby food. They are characterized by stable fruiting, give a full-fledged planting material.
