Early ripe varieties and hybrids of tomatoes are consistently in demand by amateur gardeners. This category also includes the gardener’s dream tomato. In addition to early ripening, it is characterized by unpretentious care, good immunity, “massive” fruiting, consistently good yields and compactness of plants. Therefore, for more than ten years, it has been successfully “competing” with new selections that appear on the market every year.
History of breeding
Tomato A gardener’s dream is an achievement of one of the most famous agricultural firms, Sedek. Several breeders worked on it, the authors are A. N. Lukyanenko, I. N. and S. V. Dubinin.
An application for official registration was filed in 2006, since 2007 the variety has been listed in the national State Register of Breeding Achievements. Tests have confirmed its suitability for cultivation in all regions where horticulture is generally possible, including those that are reasonably called “risk farming zones”.
Description of the variety of tomato Gardener’s Dream
A gardener’s dream is an early ripe tomato variety suitable for cultivation in open and closed ground. From the moment the seeds germinate to the harvest of the first fruits, 90-100 days pass. According to the originator, their ripening period is even shorter – 80-95 days. Probably, this is influenced by climatic and weather conditions. Tomatoes ripen massively, the first “wave” is about 70% of the total crop.
Tomato bushes The gardener’s dream is determinant. They are never drawn above the limit “given” by the breeders. In open ground, the height is 60-70 cm, in the greenhouse – 10-15 cm more. The stems are powerful, the leaves are medium-sized, the foliage is medium.
The fruits look very presentable. Tomatoes Dream of a gardener are one-dimensional, weighing about 80 g, rare specimens gain weight of 140-150 g. The standard shape for tomatoes is round, slightly flattened. Ribbing is very weakly expressed. The skin is uniformly red in color, without a light spot at the stem, glossy. Its density and elasticity provide tomatoes with good keeping quality and transportability.
The taste is officially recognized as “good”. In it, the sourness typical of tomatoes is “balanced” by sweetish notes and aftertaste. The pulp is juicy and tender, medium density. The fruits of tomatoes in the dream of a gardener are multi-chamber (4-5 or more), there are a lot of seeds in them.
Characteristics of a tomato Gardener’s Dream
Most gardeners in the description of tomatoes The gardener’s dream “bribes” the combination of compactness with consistently high yields. Good immunity is also important.
Tomato yield Gardener’s dream
The yield for small bushes is very good – about 6,3 kg / m². Gardener’s Dream tomatoes are easy to remove thanks to the articulation on the stalk. The type of fruiting is carpal, in each bunch – 4-6 tomatoes. At least five fruit clusters are formed on the bushes (usually 7-9). They are laid like this: the first – over the 5-7th sheet, then – every two sheets.
Disease and pest resistance
Tomato Gardener’s Dream has an “innate” immunity to top and root rot. The originator also claims that the variety is resistant to Fusarium, Alternaria, Verticillium, Phytophthora, and various types of mosaic virus. Reviews of gardeners confirm this information. Based on their experience, diseases are exceptional for this variety, even if the weather favors pathogen activity.
Methods of Use
In the State Register, the variety is listed as salad. However, due to their small size, tomatoes are quite suitable for whole-fruit canning. After pickling and salting, the tomatoes of the Gardener’s Dream do not lose their presentability – they retain their brightness of color, the skin rarely cracks, and the flesh does not “blur” into porridge. They are also used as “raw materials” for homemade juice, tomato paste, ketchup.
Advantages and disadvantages of tomato Gardener’s dream
Stable demand for tomato The gardener’s dream is due to a long list of its significant advantages:
- suitability for planting in open ground, under film shelters, in greenhouses, greenhouses;
- the possibility of growing in almost any region;
- care that takes the gardener a minimum of time and effort;
- the presence of “innate” immunity to various types of rot and, in general, good resistance to pathogens;
- compactness and small height of plants;
- early ripeness, “friendliness” of fruiting;
- consistently high yields, no matter how lucky the gardener is with the weather in spring and summer;
- the possibility of propagation by self-collected seeds;
- “presentation” and one-dimensionality of tomatoes;
- versatility of the purpose of the crop;
- balanced taste of fruits, their health benefits;
- very good keeping quality and transportability for tomatoes.
The only negative of the tomato variety is the gardener’s dream – the need to form bushes, tie up fruit brushes, and regularly remove stepchildren. In addition, “highly productive” plants need enhanced feeding.
Peculiarities of growing
Despite the early ripeness and general endurance, gardeners mainly practice growing a gardener’s dream tomato in seedlings. To the required dimensions (height 12-15 cm, the presence of 5-6 true leaves), seedlings grow in about two months. Based on this, determine the timing of planting seeds for seedlings. It can be transferred to the ground only when the probability of spring frosts becomes minimal.
It is advisable to immediately plant seeds of tomatoes in separate containers, so that later the seedlings do not have to dive. The best option is small peat pots, from which seedlings can not be removed before transplanting to a permanent place.
It is impossible to grow strong healthy seedlings if you do not provide them with 10-12 hours of daylight. Watering is also important – you can neither overdry the soil nor flood the seedlings.
1-4 tomato bushes are planted per 5 m². A gardener’s dream. The distance between them is 35-45 cm, between the rows – 40-50 cm. The selected area is preliminarily dug up, fertilizers are applied.
Agrotechnics for tomatoes A gardener’s dream requires a standard one. Their care includes:
- Watering. The intervals directly depend on the weather outside (air temperature, precipitation intensity). On average, twice a week is sufficient. The approximate norm is 4-5 liters per bush of tomatoes. A gardener’s dream.
- Loosening and weeding. There is an alternative to these events – mulching. If the bed is not covered with mulch, it is loosened about once a week, while pulling out weeds. Do this the next day after watering.
- Application of fertilizers. The first time the gardener’s dream tomatoes are fed 7-10 days after transplanting the seedlings into the ground. To activate the growth of green mass, a solution of any mineral nitrogen fertilizer is used. Further top dressing is applied from the moment the flowering ends every 12-15 days.
- Shaping and garter. Tomato bushes A gardener’s dream is recommended to be “led” in one or two stems. Other stepchildren are regularly removed, preventing them from stretching more than 2-3 cm. Fruit brushes are tied up as they form, the stems often cannot withstand their severity.
Pest and disease control
The gardener’s dream tomato has an “innate” immunity to the most dangerous diseases for crops. To protect plants from other pathogenic fungi, it is enough to have competent agricultural technology and adherence to the planting pattern in order to avoid “crowding” in the garden. Seeds for prevention are treated in a solution of any fungicide (15-20 minutes). The same drugs are used every 2-3 weeks, when the summer is cool and rainy.
Pests on tomatoes A gardener’s dream can only be detected in the event of their “mass” invasions of a personal plot (and this is an infrequent occurrence). Many insects are immediately repelled by the pungent smell of tomato leaves. Exceptions: aphids (small brown-black “bugs”), thrips (black “sticks”) and whiteflies (whitish “butterflies”).
All these pests feed on plant juices. If nothing is done, the affected areas of the tissues become discolored, becoming almost transparent, dry and die. To combat these insects, any universal insecticide is suitable. They also spray tomato bushes. A gardener’s dream, and the soil under them.
Conclusion
Tomato The gardener’s dream fully justifies the loud name. It is suitable for cultivation in most regions, easy to care for, rarely suffers from diseases and pests. Productivity, despite the “small size” of plants, is very good, fruiting is massive. Taste for early ripe tomatoes is simply excellent.
