Many gardeners believe that yellow tomatoes are significantly inferior to red ones in terms of their characteristics, some think that there is no difference, therefore varieties of yellow tomatoes are rarely grown. The difference between these species is in the chemical composition, because some substances are found in some cultures and absent in others, or the percentage is different. For example, yellow tomatoes contain more pulp, while liquids, on the contrary, contain less. They have more vitamin A, which determines their color, and less vitamin C. The difference also manifests itself in other nuances, and in order to get you acquainted with the varieties of yellow tomatoes, we will talk about the Honey Drop tomato.
Features
Honey drop tomatoes, like all indeterminate varieties, are tall, in a greenhouse they can reach a height of 2 meters or more, when grown in open ground they grow up to one and a half meters. A distinctive feature of the bush can be called leaves, vaguely reminiscent of potato leaves. Honey drop tomatoes are very small, weighing an average of 15-20 g, the largest – 30 g. They grow in peculiar clusters of about 15 pieces per branch. The fruits are bright yellow in color, shaped like pears or droplets, it is because of the external features that the variety got the name Honey Drop. Yes, and the taste they have not far gone from the product of the activity of bees – the fruits are extremely sweet, the content of sugars in the pulp is one of the highest among tomatoes of all varieties.
Tomato Honey drop has a strong immunity to several diseases at once. For example, it rarely undergoes black leg, resistant to late blight. As noted by many gardeners, it is more often sick when grown in greenhouses than in open ground, this is primarily due to high humidity. Relatively resistant to drought and low temperatures.
Reviews
Reviews tomato Honey drop received a variety, but most of them can be classified as neutral. The positive ones relate to the taste of yellow fruits. Indeed, it is simply impossible to ignore delicious tomatoes. Several reviews related to seeds: the Honey Drop seed is characterized by high germination (from 95%), and this did not escape the attention of forum users. It is often noted that you need to devote a lot of time to caring for the plant, in particular pinching. If you ignore this process, then soon your “plantation” of this variety will become like a jungle. Of the negative points: they complain about the low yield of the variety and poor response to changing growing conditions (sensitivity to air humidity, exactingness to the soil, etc.). In general, they note that Honey Drop is a good variety, and it’s still worth trying to grow it in your greenhouse.
Application
Methods of application are partly due to the substances that are contained in the fruits. So, the increased sugar content of many encourages the preparation of honey drop tomato jam. Small-sized tomatoes are very useful for rolling in jars. But most often they are consumed fresh. And not just for salads. Due to the fact that yellow tomatoes are less caloric than red ones, they are often included in the diet of people on a diet. It is also worth giving preference to yellow tomatoes for people suffering from high acidity, since red ones contain more ascorbic acid, better known as vitamin C. The constant use of yellow tomatoes strengthens the walls of blood vessels. The fruits of the Honey Drop are practically not used for the preparation of tomato products (juice, paste).
Special care
As already mentioned, you can grow both in a greenhouse and in a garden. The seed is planted for seedlings at the end of March, it is better to do this immediately in individual containers (pre-harden and process the seed). It is desirable to choose the soil as fertile as possible. Seeds are placed at a depth of no more than 2 cm. The temperature in the room is maintained at 22-25 degrees. Watering is not very plentiful, but systematically. Top dressing should be done several times both for seedlings and later in the open field. They dive in the phase of 2 leaves, they are transplanted into open ground only when constant warm weather is established (so that the earth warms up) and the threat of late frosts has passed.
In the garden, do not forget to loosen the soil and remove weeds. You need to tie up regardless of the growing environment, form one or 2 stems, remove extra stepchildren in order to avoid mass reproduction of plants. Despite the good resistance of the variety, it is advisable to do preventive spraying.
The Honey Drop tomato belongs to mid-early varieties, therefore, with the first red tomatoes, you can also harvest yellow fruits. This variety of yellow tomatoes harmoniously looks in the garden along with red tomatoes.
