When tomatoes first came to Europe, they only came in 2 colors: red and yellow. Since then, the color palette of these vegetables has expanded significantly, and the yellow color has been enriched with various shades: from almost white to yellow-orange. It is these tomatoes that are most loved by many gardeners, not only for their excellent taste, but also for their undoubted benefits.
The benefits of yellow tomatoes
Scientists have found that yellow tomatoes are 2 times healthier than red ones. They are high in lycopene, which is a powerful antioxidant. Its effect on the body is multifaceted up to slowing down the aging of the human body. The effect increases with age. Tetra-cis-lycopene has the same properties. It is a carotenoid pigment and exhibits antioxidant properties. Yellow tomatoes have a unique vitamin and mineral composition and the lowest calorie content of all tomatoes.
They are useful for the following diseases:
- oncological diseases, including prostate and bladder cancer;
- diseases of the cardiovascular system – myocin, which is found in yellow-fruited varieties of tomatoes, strengthens the heart and blood vessels;
- liver and kidney disease;
- digestive problems.
Due to the lower acid content, they can be eaten by those who are contraindicated in red sour varieties. Yellow-fruited varieties are the only tomatoes that can be consumed by allergy sufferers, since there is no allergy to them.
There are quite a few varieties of yellow-colored tomatoes. But, according to gardeners, one of the best is Golden Koenigsberg.
This is the only yellow-fruited variety among all Koenigsbergs and the sweetest of them. The variety was bred in Siberia and was originally intended for cultivation in areas where summers are short but hot. It turned out that it also grows well in other regions, so Golden Koenigsberg settled in the plots of many gardeners in different parts of our country. In order to understand why he so attracts fans to grow his tomatoes, look at his photo and read the full description and reviews, find out the main characteristics.
Characteristics and description of tomato
The tomato variety Golden Koenigsberg is indeterminate. This means that he does not stop his growth on his own, the gardener will have to take care of this when rationing the crop and shaping the bush. If you plant it in open ground, where it grows well, then the height of the bush will be up to 1,5 m. In the greenhouse, this figure is higher and reaches 2 m. Under the conditions of a short summer, the Golden Koenigsberg tomato is able to produce a crop on only two shoots. When forming a bush, in addition to the main stem, a stepson is left under the first flower brush, since it has great growth power. All other stepchildren should be regularly removed on a stump.
Two axillary shoots will form the main stems. This method is also suitable for the Golden Koenigsberg tomato.
No more than 8 brushes are left on the tomato, and in an unfavorable summer or on a weakened plant, and no more than 6. Then pinch the top, leaving 2-3 leaves above the flower brush for better nutrition. In this case, the harvest will be considerable, since each brush usually ties up to 6 tomatoes, the weight of the first ones is up to 400 g, in subsequent brushes it is slightly less. With good care, experienced gardeners remove up to 2 buckets of tomatoes from one plant.
It can be said about the fruits of the Golden Koenigsberg that this is a combination of beauty, usefulness and excellent taste. Weighty golden-orange cream with a barely noticeable spout just asks for the table.
The pulp is dense, there are few seeds in the tomato, but there are a lot of sugars and dry substances, so it has a rich taste, which is closer to fruit than to vegetable. For this and for the beautiful color and shape of the fruit, the Golden Koenigsberg is sometimes called the “Siberian apricot” by the people.
In terms of maturation, it is classified as mid-season varieties. When sowing seedlings in March, the first fruits can be tasted as early as July.
To taste the delicious and healthy fruits of the Golden Koenigsberg tomato, you need to work hard.
Features of care
Like all mid-ripening tomatoes, the Golden Koenigsberg variety is grown through seedlings. Seeds should be sown 2 months before transplanting seedlings into the ground. Each region will have its own timing. For the middle zone, this is the end of February, the beginning of March for growing in a greenhouse, and the middle of March when planting a tomato in open ground.
Growing seedlings
Seeds must be prepared before sowing. Only well-executed large seeds are selected – strong plants will grow from them. In order to further protect tomatoes from diseases, they are pickled in a solution of potassium permanganate, which is popularly called potassium permanganate. It is impossible to keep them in solution for more than half an hour. After processing, tomato seeds should be washed well under running water, and then soaked in any stimulant. This will increase the energy of seed germination, give the future Golden Koenigsberg tomato plants strength and resistance to diseases. You can combine disinfection and stimulation by soaking the seeds in aloe juice diluted in half with water.
Seeds swell about 18 hours. After that, they are immediately sown in containers in a pre-prepared mixture of sand, purchased soil and soddy or leafy soil in equal parts. If there is ash, it can also be added to the planting mix. Enough Art. spoons per 1 kg of soil.
The planting depth is 2 cm, and the distance between adjacent seeds is from 2 to 3 cm. If you are not going to pick seedlings, Golden Koenigsberg tomato seeds can be planted in small separate cassettes or cups. In the future, plants will need transshipment into large containers. Such tomatoes will bear fruit earlier. They cannot be planted immediately in a large container. The roots do not have time to master a large volume, and the soil may turn sour.
The sown seeds are covered with earth and put on a container with a plastic bag. Best of all, Golden Koenigsberg tomato seeds germinate at a temperature of about 25 degrees, so the seed container should be kept in a warm place. As soon as the first seedlings have hatched, the bag is removed, and the container is placed in the brightest and coolest place. After a few days, the temperature is raised to 20 degrees during the day and 17 at night.
Golden Koenigsberg tomato plants dive as soon as 2 true leaves appear.
Watering seedlings should be moderate only with warm settled water. During the growing season of Golden Koenigsberg tomato seedlings, 2-3 top dressings should be done with a complex soluble mineral fertilizer containing trace elements. The dosage is reduced by half from the norm for top dressing in open ground.
Before moving to a permanent place, Golden Koenigsberg tomato seedlings need to be accustomed to fresh air. To do this, it is taken out into the street, first for a short time, then it is gradually increased.
Post disembarkation care
The seedlings planted in the ground well seasoned with humus and fertilizers are watered and shaded so that it takes root faster. In the future, care consists of regular watering and top dressing. At the first stage of growth, 10 liters per square meter are poured once a week. During flowering and fruiting – 2 times a week for the same amount. As soon as the fruits are fully formed on all brushes, watering is reduced. Water only under the root with warm water 3 hours before sunset.
This tomato variety is fed every decade with a complete complex fertilizer, increasing the potassium rate with the beginning of flowering. Tomato Golden Koenigsberg has a tendency to vertex rot, so it will take 1-2 top dressing with a solution of calcium nitrate at the time of the formation of the first brush and after 2 weeks. This tomato variety needs preventive treatments for diseases, especially late blight. At the beginning of the growing season, it is possible to use chemicals, with the onset of flowering, you need to switch to folk methods.
Simple, but regular care will allow you to get a good harvest of tasty and healthy fruits that have a healing effect.
