Tomato fever is an infectious disease, also called tomato flu. India has seen a rapid increase in the incidence of this disease among children under the age of five. It is estimated that currently about 80 young patients have it. The tomato flu is characterized by characteristic spherical blisters.

All cases of tomato flu have been reported in Kerala, a state in the south-west of India. The disease spreads quite rapidly there. According to Narayan Health, the exact cause of the infection has not yet been established. Some scientists believe, however, that it may be a complication after a history of tropical diseases: chikungunyi or dengue — both are transmitted by mosquitoes and appear as a rash.
Symptoms of tomato fever
The most characteristic symptom is red blisters that become large and spherical over time, reminiscent of tomatoes. In addition, diarrhea, cough, muscle and joint pain, fatigue, skin irritation and fever may also occur. Nausea and vomiting, spots and discoloration on the skin, as well as severe pain and abdominal cramps appear less frequently.
Of all the symptoms, dehydration is the most dangerous. During illness, give your baby as much fluid as possible.

How long does tomato flu last?
Dr Shivaranjani Santosh, a pediatrician, told timesofindia.com that symptoms appear about three to six days after contact with an infected person. Usually, there are cold-like symptoms that last a day or two first, and then itchy blisters appear on the body. Sometimes also in the mouth — then the baby drools intensely. Recovery usually takes about seven days.
Possible complications
A drip is required when a child is admitted to hospital, usually caused by a high fever and dehydration. Dr Samantha Reddy, a pediatrician at Apollo Clinics, told the Times of India that tomato flu was associated with cardiac and neurological complications, but “none have been reported so far.”
Adults and the tomato flu
Adults do not show symptoms of the disease, most likely because their immune system is better at fighting the virus. But that doesn’t mean they can’t move it without knowing it. A child can become infected through contact with an adult.
The health service in India recommends caution (in case of illness, it is worth using personal hygiene measures and informing children about the symptoms so that they avoid contact with infected peers) and warned citizens about a possible increase in the disease.
