Tobradex is a combined preparation containing an anti-infective drug (tobramycin) and a corticosteroid drug (dexamethasone). Used topically in the treatment of bacterial eye infections with concomitant inflammation.
Tobradex – composition
It is a combined preparationcontaining 2 active substances: tobramycin with antimicrobial activity and dexamethasone with anti-inflammatory properties. The substances form the form of eye drops.
Tobradex – indications
The preparation is indicated for the treatment of inflammation and the prevention of infections after cataract surgery, and for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis and eyelid margins. On the recommendation of a doctor, the drug can be administered to adults and children from 2 years of age.
Tobradex – action
Tobramycin is an antibiotic from the group of broad-spectrum aminoglycosides. Its mechanism of action, common to the entire group of aminoglycoside antibiotics, is based on inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial proteins. Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid drug. It has a strong anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and anti-exudative effect. After topical application to the eye, tobramycin and dexamethasone have little penetration into the circulation (the extent of dexamethasone absorption may increase if the corneal epithelium is irritated and damaged).
Tobradex – contraindications
The preparation cannot be used in the case of a university, any component of the preparation or any antibiotic from the aminoglycoside group. Avoid using the preparation during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Preparat Tobradex it is also contraindicated for use if there is an infection of the cornea with herpes viruses, vaccinia, chicken pox, other viral diseases of the cornea or conjunctiva, tuberculous eye infection, fungal eye infection, untreated purulent eye infection, as well as after uncomplicated removal of a foreign body from the cornea.
Tobradex – dosage
The dosage should be in accordance with the doctor’s recommendations. Usually 1-2 drops are applied to the conjunctival sac every 4-6 hours. During the first 24-48 hours, the dose may be increased to 1-2 drops every 2 hours, in severe cases every 1 hour.
