Babies – a boy and a girl – were born prematurely. The doctors were sure that the girl would not survive, she was so tiny. Fortunately, the gloomy predictions did not come true: the twins would live.
The first pregnancy is always exciting. And if twins are expected, then it is also dangerous, because multiple pregnancies always increase the risks. Of course, complications do not always happen, but it happened to 27-year-old Laura: the condition of the placenta was rapidly deteriorating, and doctors were afraid that she would not be able to deliver the pregnancy even until 28 weeks, when the chances of saving the twins would still be above zero.
“To say that I was nervous is to say nothing. I literally climbed the wall. I had to go to the hospital twice a week, the doctors monitored the blood flow of the babies, ”says Laura.
The thing turned out to be that, although the twins had different amniotic sacs, they did not have enough food. The placenta was rapidly aging and could not provide babies with sufficient oxygen and nutrients.
“Louis felt a little better and grew faster. And Neve was so small … The doctors said that she would not survive. But they wanted me to carry the pregnancy as long as I could, so that the babies would at least mature a little, ”Laura continues.
The young mother did the impossible: she was able to wear the pregnancy for up to 30 weeks. And after another visit to the hospital, she did not return home: Laura was sent for an emergency caesarean. The babies were born tiny: the boy weighed only 1360 grams, and the girl about 500 grams. Usually, the twins are kept in the same incubator, it is so calmer for them. But in this case, they decided to separate the children: the complications were too serious. Louis, for example, had a collapse of his lungs – oddly enough, the boy felt worse than his tiny sister.
They spent two weeks in different incubators. After that, the twins were reunited – they were put in one incubator. Louis and Neave instantly felt the closeness of a loved one: the kids reached out to each other, hugged and crossed their legs.
“My girl turned out to be an incredible fighter. Even the doctors were impressed, they often come to visit our baby. They say they will miss Louis and Neave when they go home, ”smiles Laura, who has finally stopped crying. – This is the first baby so tiny in their practice who was able to breathe on its own after birth. She is still smaller than a baby doll, but she will be fine. ”
