Time for health: Liver cancer

In Poland, approximately 2 people die of liver cancer each year. If the disease is not treated, prognosis is not favorable.

Liver cancer incidence

In Poland, about two thousand people die every year from liver cancer. If liver cancer is left untreated, the prognosis is very poor due to approx. 90% of the cancer. five-year mortality. It depends on what stage the disease is diagnosed at. Sometimes the diagnosis is made when the disease is already very advanced.

The average survival time from diagnosis is six months. In 80 percent. of cases, liver cancer is caused by cirrhosis caused by infection with viruses C and B and excessive alcohol consumption.

Liver cancer symptoms and treatment

There are no clear signs of liver cancer. Often the symptoms that appear are symptoms of, for example, liver decompensation. It could be jaundice or ascites. These are very late symptoms, so it is recommended to perform an ultrasound scan, which is effective in the early detection of this cancer.

Systemic chemotherapy with intravenous drugs and chemotherapeutic agents is not effective in treating liver cancer. Instead, you can try to administer these drugs to the hepatic artery, and this is a treatment that may be effective. Other types of treatment are also possible. Topical treatments, such as e.g. thermoablationwhere electrodes are implanted in the lung and the heat destroys the cancer. If the cancer is found at an early stage, it is also possible to treat it through liver transplant. It can only be used in situations where the cancer is not advanced, so when there are few outbreaks and there is no cancer outside the liver. Surgical removal of the tumor along with part of the liver is also possible, but this can be risky for people who have cirrhosis. The liver is much worse after such surgery.

A cancer patient may live up to several dozen years, but the prognosis depends on when we catch the disease.
