Diseases of the thyroid gland appear more and more often in society. The doctor who deals with her diseases is an endocrinologist. In the event of symptoms that may directly indicate a diseased thyroid gland, you should consult him as soon as possible. He or she will perform an appropriate thyroid examination and issue a diagnosis that will allow you to start treatment.

Thyroid examination – what it looks like

Thyroid examination is a fairly general concept. It can be said that it is carried out by a doctor in the office. Then the surface of the gland is palpated. Already at this stage, the endocrinologist can detect certain abnormalities. When examining the thyroid gland in a doctor’s office, its structure and size are assessed. Additionally, the doctor checks that there are no lumps or lumps under the fingers. If he detects something disturbing, he sends the patient to an ultrasound scan.

It is worth doing thyroid tests from time to time, even if we do not observe any symptoms that indicate health problems. There are also a number of thyroid tests that are performed on a collected blood sample. One of them is, for example, TSH, which gives an overall picture. In the event that the TSH comes out unclear, it makes sense to do a thorough diagnosis. Very often it is FT3, FT4.

Sometimes the doctor will also give you a referral for anti-thyroid antibodies. They usually include 3 studies – ATPO, ATG and ATRAB. In the case of an increase in the first two indicators, the doctor has good grounds to suspect that the patient’s disease is associated with autoimmune thyroiditis.

Thyroid examination – on an empty stomach

Any thyroid testing that involves taking a blood sample for testing should be done on an empty stomach.

Thyroid examination – price

Usually, at the very beginning, only the TSH level test is performed. This test is inexpensive. Usually we will pay a dozen or so zlotys for it. Your GP can refer you to TSH itself, so you don’t have to pay for it. In the case of other tests, referral should be made to a specialist – endocrinologist. However, if, due to queues to the doctor, we decide to undergo private treatment and we are just getting ready for the first visit, it is worth doing the entire thyroid panel. A panel is nothing more than a whole group of specific studies. Its advantage is that it comes out a bit cheaper than the sum of the prices of all the tests it contains.

Additionally, if this is our first visit, we may not know which tests are necessary. By performing a thyroid panel test, you can be sure that you will not miss anything. Sometimes, in addition to blood tests, it is recommended to perform it Thyroid ultrasound. The price of this ultrasound examination does not exceed PLN 100. In most establishments, however, we can make them a bit cheaper. The ultrasound examination will show any changes in the thyroid parenchyma.
