Can thyroid medications have side effects? Is it worth choosing unconventional methods of treatment? Should you be concerned about drug treatment? Can drugs be overdosed? Can they be dangerous? The question is answered by the drug. Paweł Żmuda-Trzebiatowski.

What might be the effects of taking thyroid medications?

Good day. My name is Anastazja, I am 32 years old and I suffer from hypothyroidism. I found out about it relatively recently and it is a difficult experience for both me and my husband. Recently, I was on a medical visit and the doctor told me what the entire treatment process would involve. He suggested that I should take levothyroxine. However, I don’t know if this will be the only remedy. My husband is wondering whether to decide on pharmacological treatment, or whether he should look for some unconventional methods of treatment.

Our main concern is the side effects they can cause thyroid medications. Is this a valid concern? Can these types of medications be dangerous? What happens when I overdose on any thyroid medication? I’m afraid I wouldn’t get pregnant or gain weight because of them. I know my husband likes me as I am, but I still want to be attractive to him. Please dispel my doubts. I don’t know what to think about it. I am afraid of the whole healing process, which will last for the rest of my life. Regards, Anastazja.

The doctor explains the effects of drugs on the health of the thyroid gland

Ladies and Gentlemen, when taking any medications, you should take into account possible side effects. Levothyroxine is synthetic thyroid hormonewhich is necessary for the proper functioning of the body in the case of a shortage of natural hormones. No unconventional methods can replace levothyroxine substitution treatment, so they will not improve your health. If levothyroxine is used in the right doses with proper monitoring of treatment, the chance of developing side effects is unlikely.

Their presence may appear in the case of using too high doses or when increasing them too quickly. Cardiac arrhythmias including atrial fibrillation, palpitations, headache, dyspnoea and chest pain, tremors, flushing with fever, menstrual disorders, agitation and irritability, sweating, insomnia, decreased weight; and diarrhea with abdominal pain. As you can see, there can be a lot of side effects, but as mentioned above, they result from excess thyroid hormonesand thus induced hyperthyroidism. Symptoms should resolve after discontinuation of the drug. You should then resume the administration of levothyroxine, but in a modified dose determined by the treating physician.
