The thyroid gland almost didn’t cause divorce
– We’ve been through hell. Not only me, but the whole family. The worst devil in this hell was me and although I know that it is not entirely my fault, because I was sick, I am ashamed of what I could do to this day – Karolina smoothes the non-existent folds of the skirt and stares at the floor. Paweł, who nine years ago vowed to Karolina in front of the altar that only death would separate them, adds that the thyroid gland was close to not being the cause of their divorce.
“It really was as if the devil had stepped into her.” I thought I lived under the same roof with a volcano that erupts at the most unexpected moments. It’s terrible that our seven-year-old daughter once hid under the table and refused to come out for another hour after Karol had finished screaming that she hated her and that she regretted having had her. And the thing was, the little one spilled the juice on the floor – a trifle, right?
The little things were the worst. An unwashed glass, a dirty cat litter box, the milk that her husband had forgotten to buy – all these provoked Karolina to scream, so loud that the neighbors banged on the radiators. Even the alarm clock that rang to wake up could provoke her …
– I broke three. Their sound pissed me off so much that I pounded them with all my strength, they flew across the room and hit the wall – Karolina seems to be an oasis of peace today and it’s hard to believe that she was able to unleash such destructive forces. The quarrels began when she turned 38. – I was even wondering if it was not an earlier menopause, because I was still hot, I was sweating as if I weighed 100 kilos, but I was thinning in my eyes. My heart was pounding, I couldn’t sleep, which was probably why I hated those goddamn alarm clocks so much. I also hated my husband and baby. I was lying next to Paweł at night and I thought that he had wasted my life, I felt like grabbing his head and banging it on the bed frame.
– I was able to destroy his CDs and clothes in anger, once I took his passport so that he would not go on a delegation abroad. When I was going crazy, as if something was taking over me, I was completely out of control. If I were a believer, I would go to a priest to ask for an exorcism, and this is how I ended up at a psychiatrist. Two days after Kamila did not want to leave the table after the row – then I saw that I would either do something with myself or that I had to run away from my family, because I would torment them to death. I was lucky to find a wise doctor who did not give me psychotropics, because I would probably take them for the rest of my life, but he told me to go to a normal doctor and check the thyroid gland.
Diagnosis: advanced hyperthyroidism
The day when Karolina received the results of the TSH level test, i.e. the thyroid stimulating hormone that stimulates the thyroid gland, was the happiest day of her life. – I wanted to scream in the street: I’m sick, people, I’m sick!
It turned out that she is not a psychotic or crazy, and her aggression from hell, weight loss, heart problems and lack of sleep were caused by advanced hyperthyroidism.
– A month on drugs and I got my wife back. The angry babon has disappeared, Karola is again the same gentle, calm girl with whom I married – says Paweł. – I admit that when she told me about the diagnosis, I got drunk. Three years of hell, constant thoughts of divorce, hundreds of hours of brawls, hard-to-forget insults, a child with the onset of neurosis – and it’s all because of a stupid thyroid?

A stupid thyroid is actually not that stupid and it has a huge impact on our lives and development. It affects intellectual abilities, regulates the functions of the nervous and reproductive systems, controls the digestive system and regulates the heart rhythm. It also interferes with the condition of bones, skin and hair, determines how we perceive cold and heat, as well as the amount of fluid retained in the body. When it’s out of balance, it’s like someone planted a bomb in our body’s general staff. The victim of the thyroid bomber most often there is a woman – Thyroid diseases are eight times more likely to attack women than men.

How many of them tire for years, tormenting their relatives and not knowing that the cause of their mood swings, unmanageable aggression or deep depression is a defective functioning of this gland? It is not known. The fact is that thyroid diseases are easy to miss, and their symptoms can be attributed to exhaustion or stress. At least until they become so severe that it is no longer possible to function without medical help. Untreated hyperthyroidism can even lead to psychosis, and hypothyroidism to depression.
– Especially susceptible to the latter are women in perimenopause (40+) and menopausal (50+) who have problems with hypothyroidism – says Małgorzata Jędrzejczyk, MD, PhD, gynecologist and endocrinologist. And he goes on to list the symptoms that low thyroid hormone levels can cause. – Increasing heaviness, decrease in intellectual efficiency, slowing down of thought processes. With a high degree of hypothyroidism, even speech may slow down. In addition, there is an increase in body weight or problems with losing weight, dry skin, brittle nails and hair loss.

Mysterious disease
Thyroid bomber, however, is a sly art and rarely gives us the full set of symptoms. One, two, three symptoms slowly increasing – this is her frequent plan of action. As a result, online forums are bursting with posts describing the way through the torment and the corridors of clinics that patients go through before they are properly diagnosed for thyroid diseases. Dermatologist, cardiologist, gastroenterologist, psychiatrist – these offices are most often visited by women who really need the help of an endocrinologist.
– Change in general well-being, its deterioration, changes in body weight, skin changes, menstrual disorders, problems with getting pregnant – all these are contributing factors to the diagnosis of endocrine diseases – believes Dr. Jędrzejczyk. – You should remember that some thyroid diseases may not be symptomatic. Generally speaking, diseases of the thyroid gland can slow down all the mechanisms in the body or make them much faster.

Thyroid problems most often appear in one of the three stages of a woman’s life. – During puberty, during pregnancy and especially during the perinatal period and as we approach the menopause. In addition, all serious diseases can affect the functioning of the thyroid gland and the occurrence of its diseases – says Dr. Jędrzejczak.
When the heart beats slower
The solution is either a daily dose of a drug that stabilizes thyroid hormone levels or a surgical procedure necessary for certain diseases. It is comforting that the most difficult thing in the case of thyroid diseases is to diagnose them, and after a month of taking medications, the body usually returns to normal functioning. A low level of thyroid hormones can also be said to be a kind of longevity elixir. According to studies on older women living over 100 years from the Okinawa region and the Mediterranean Sea, most of them have mild hypothyroidism.
This means that their metabolism is weaker, their heart works slower, so it can work longer. Doctors say that in people over 85 there is no point in treating hypothyroidism with thyroxine usually administered, because the disease does not increase the risk of death, but even makes it more difficult. So the thyroid gland can be gracious at the end of life.
