Thyroid disc (Saucer pink-red): photo and description, benefits and contraindications, recipes

Thyroid discine – a mushroom of an early fruiting period. The first copies are found in March or April, the growth of colonies continues until June. In appearance and coloring, the discomycete was called pink-red saucer. In biological reference books, the fungus is referred to as Discina perlata.

Description of the thyroid disorder

The early spring marsupial appears immediately after the snow melts; it tolerates slight frosts without damaging the fruiting body. The vegetation is slow, the thyroid disc reaches its biological maturity in 2-2,5 weeks. Mushrooms are large in size, individual specimens grow up to 15 cm in diameter. At first, the discine is light brown with a pink tint, then dark chestnut. There are black fruiting bodies.

Color changes as you get older

The external characteristics of the pink-red saucer are as follows:

  1. At the beginning of growth, the shape of the apothecia is cup-shaped or barrel-shaped, rounded with edges wrapped inward. Then it becomes flattened in the form of a saucer, widely spread, with large radially located folds. Edges uneven wavy concave.
  2. The spore-bearing layer is located on the outer part of the fruiting body, therefore, in the process of maturation of the spores, the color of the thyroid disc changes.
  3. The lower surface is sterile, smooth matte, light brown or dark beige in color with pronounced streaks.
  4. In the central part there are blunt ribs from the stem, which reach the edge of the surface.
  5. The false leg is very short – up to 3 cm, ribbed, mainly located in the substrate. Often it is absent or formed in the form of a rudiment.
  6. The pulp is thin, very fragile, cartilaginous, but quite juicy. In young specimens – white with a gray tint. In an adult saucer – light brown.
Important! The disc is thyroid, odorless and tasteless.

Twins and their differences

Mycological reference books do not list a poisonous double, and discipline does not have one. According to morphological data, there is a similar species – veined disciotis.

Dissiotis veiny with dark scales on the surface

An early mushroom of a conditionally edible category. Color – from dark brown to black. Grows in groups in open areas of temperate mixed forests. The double differs from the thyroid discin by the presence of small dark gray scales on the lower part of the apothecia and a pronounced smell of chlorine.

The danger is an ordinary line, which outwardly resembles a thyroid disc. Both species are part of the Discinaceae family, the fruiting time is also the same.

Line ordinary with a small leg and a folded surface

At the beginning of growth, the thyroid discina differs from the line in a relatively smooth fruiting body. Adult mushrooms are similar in appearance with uneven edges and a folded surface. But the line has a short, easily defined leg, the upper part is not extended, without borders at the edge.

Attention! The species is poisonous, the chemical composition contains the toxic substance gyromitrin – deadly to humans.

Where and how to grow

The thyroid disc is a saprotrophic species, it grows in pine forests and mixed massifs, where coniferous trees are often found. The distribution area is the entire European part of the Federation, except for the northern regions, as well as the Central and Southern regions. The mushroom picker is located on rotting wood or in the ground. A prerequisite for the fruiting of thyroid discine is a sufficient amount of light and moist soil. Prefers to settle on disturbed ground after clearings, first appears in places of fires, less common on the sides of forest roads and the edge of ditches. It grows in groups, on damaged soil it reaches its peak yield in the third year of fruiting, it can completely cover fairly large areas.

Is the mushroom edible or not?

Thyroid disk is included in the last group in terms of nutritional value, it belongs to conditionally edible. Apothecia tasteless, with a slight mushroom smell. The main advantage of the species is early fruiting. The pulp is very fragile, does not tolerate transportation. If the collection container is not chosen correctly, you can bring small crumbs home.

Fruiting bodies are versatile in use, the tender pulp, with proper handling, is suitable for drying, frying, stewing and cooking first courses. Early spring species are rarely taken for winter harvesting. If the harvest is plentiful, discina can be frozen and used in late summer to marinate with other mushrooms.

How to cook thyroid discine

Remains of litter and soil are removed from the discine, washed. Then boil in salted water for 10 minutes. The broth is unsuitable for further use, it is poured out. With the observance of the processing technology, the saucer turns out to be tender and pleasant in taste.

Benefits of Thyroid Discine

Early spring mushrooms differ from late species in a small chemical composition. In the fruiting body of the discine is the substance chitin, which prevents the increase in the level of bad cholesterol by binding fats.

Due to the concentration of chondroitin in the composition, the benefit of thyroid dyscinia lies in the ability of the substance to retain water in the cartilage tissue. Mushrooms are used to treat articular pathologies: rheumatism, polyarthritis and osteochondrosis.

For this purpose, prepare a tincture of raw mushrooms (200 g) and vodka (0,5 l) or alcohol. The agent is placed in any dark container, except for a metal one, and kept for three weeks.

Conclusion

Thyroid discine is an early spring mushroom with low nutritional value. Included in the list of conditionally edible species. The saucer is widespread in coniferous or mixed massifs, it parasitizes on pine tree remains or grows on soil, often damaged. Fruiting bodies are used for all types of processing.
