Thyme is commonly used in cooking as a seasoning for various types of meat, fish, vegetables, and desserts. However, not everyone is aware of the potential of this plant. It has a number of health and care properties. Zana has been around since ancient times.
Thyme – herb from southern Europe
Thyme is a plant belonging to the Lyme family. Also known as thyme, thyme, thyme. The plant grows to about 30 cm in height, has easily recognizable small leaves and purple flowers. It comes from the Mediterranean basin, but today it is also cultivated in other parts of the world. The herb was widely used since antiquity. The Greeks used an infusion of thyme for urinary problems. In Ancient Rome, the plant was used in health baths. And the Egyptians used thyme both in cooking and in embalming a corpse.
Thyme for cough, digestive problems and more
Thyme has a broad health effect. First of all, it has strong antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. In natural medicine, it is used to treat ailments of the digestive and urinary systems. It helps with diarrhea, constipation and indigestion. When added to dishes, it facilitates their digestion and accelerates metabolism. In addition, it soothes diseases of the intestines, stomach and liver.
Try Para Farm – liquid supplement, Para Farm capsules or Para Farm Max Plus – liquid supplement – preparations containing, among others, thyme and support the functioning of the digestive and immune systems, also having antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.
Maintaining the intestinal balance is also supported by the Calamus Worm Syrup, which contains, among others, thyme and wormwood.
Thyme in the form of syrups, infusions and other means is irreplaceable in infections of the throat, tonsils and mouth. With its diastolic and expectorant effects it is also useful as a cough remedy. Try Zatoki – a liquid supplement that contains, among others, thyme and has a beneficial effect on the functioning of the respiratory system. We also recommend Immunity – freeze-dried organic tea with thyme, calendula, elderberry and sage.
The advantages of this inconspicuous herb do not end there. As an ingredient in cosmetics, it helps maintain healthy skin. Creams and other thyme-rich agents should be available to people with oily and acne-prone skin and oily hair.
Thyme can also be combined with honey. You will find honey with thyme and coltsfoot at a favorable price on the Medonet Market.
Thyme in the kitchen
Thyme not only heals but also tastes good. Due to its distinctive taste, it occupies a high position in French cuisine and this is what it is most associated with. Together with parsley and bay leaves, it creates the well-known bouquet garni. The herb goes well with fish, poultry, veal, lamb and beef. It is perfect as an addition to soups, stews, stuffing, but also with vegetables (including asparagus, broccoli, beans and leek).
Thyme and other spices for use in the kitchen can be found in Father Mateusz’s blend of 18 herbs, which you can order at Medonet Market.
Nutritional properties of thyme
The name of the plant comes from the Greek word thymon, which means “to disinfect”. In this original sense, one of the most important features of thyme is evident. The plant owes its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and immune-boosting properties to a number of active ingredients. These include:
- essential oils with a predominance of thymol,
- minerals (including potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium),
- B vitamins,
- vitamin C,
- flavonoids.
Thyme is also used as an ingredient in natural cosmetics. Check out Sylveco Thyme Gel, which cleans the face of impurities and gently cares for it, restoring its healthy appearance.
Thyme and thymol – what to watch out for?
Though thymol is one of the main beneficial ingredients in thyme, an excess of it can be dangerous. In high concentrations, thymol is toxic to our body, which can lead to poisoning and damage to internal organs. Due to the diastolic effect of the plant, it is not recommended for use during pregnancy.
Homemade ways to use thyme
Thyme can be used in the form of various medicines and cosmetics. As an ingredient, it is found in shampoos for oily hair, dandruff, cough syrups, indigestion remedies and many more. Preparations full of health-promoting properties can also be easily prepared by yourself.
Try e.g.

Thyme infusion
In order to prepare the infusion, pour about 250 ml of boiling water over one tablespoon of the herb. Brewing should take about 10 minutes. After this time, the infusion is ready. Depending on the purpose, you can drink it like tea, wash your face with it or rinse your hair.
Thyme syrup
It is worth preparing for a cough and an unpleasant sore throat homemade thyme syrup. It is enough to boil one tablespoon of thyme, one chopped onion and 250 ml of water and simmer for 30 minutes. After cooling and draining, add six tablespoons of honey. The syrup prepared in this way will be a natural remedy for throat infections and coughs (both dry and wet).
