Thuja propagation by cuttings in summer, autumn
Thuja is a coniferous tree that is often used in landscape design. It is quite difficult and expensive to grow it, so experienced gardeners prefer another method – propagation of thuja by cuttings. After all, a future seedling can be plucked from an adult tree for free.
Thuja propagation in summer by cuttings
The main advantage of summer cuttings is the ability of the seedling to grow a good root system during the winter period. The best time for the procedure is the end of June. The stalk should not be cut, but plucked. Its length should be about 20 cm. The lower part of the seedling should be freed from the needles and soaked in a special stimulator for root growth.
To land, you must act according to the algorithm:
- Punch a few small holes in the bottom of the wooden box.
- Fill the bottom with boxes of coarse sand.
- Deepen the cuttings in the sand to a depth of 2 cm and water the seedlings liberally.
After the procedure, the box should be tightened with plastic wrap and left in the shade.
Next, you need to moisten and ventilate the greenhouse daily. In the fall, you should prepare a bed and transplant trees. In this place, seedlings will grow for two years. After this period, you can finally transplant the thuja.
Thuja propagation in autumn by cuttings
Experienced gardeners prefer to plant thuja in the fall. After all, it is at this time of the year that sap flow slows down, which means that the future tree is unlikely to die from a lack of water. The best time for cutting off cuttings is October. In this case, you should choose branches that have reached the age of three.
To carry out the landing, you must perform the following steps:
- Cover the bottom of the box with medium-sized gravel.
- Fill the rest of the crate with a mixture of peat, sand, and decayed foliage.
- Leave the cuttings in the Kornevin solution overnight.
- Plant seedlings in shallow holes.
- Cover the box with plastic wrap and place in a well-lit area.
After all procedures, the soil should be moderately moistened with a spray bottle.
In mid-spring, the seedlings are rooted in a pre-prepared bed. Here they must mature for several years. Before the onset of the first winter cold weather, the cuttings should be insulated with spruce twigs and plastic wrap. In the third year of life, they can already be transplanted into a place where they will grow for the rest of their life.
If you decide to grow thuja using cuttings, then be sure to use the above recommendations. And in a few years you will get even small, but already formed young trees.
