The Columna variety is a coniferous tree from the cypress family. It is distinguished by a dense, elongated cylindrical crown. The height of adult specimens reaches 10 m. The foliage consists of scales tightly adjacent to each other, forming an acicular structure. The needles are soft and flexible. Its rich green hue gives way to golden brown in the cold season. The crown diameter is from 1,2 to 1,5 m.Slow growth provides an annual growth of no more than 5 cm.
Thuja “Columna” has a thin root system. Its roots are dense and sinuous. They are closely intertwined with mycorrhiza. The trunk of the plant is strong and powerful. Its dense bark is brown with a red tone.
Thuja is a long-lived plant. Its lifespan can exceed 200 years.
Ephedra can be grown as a tapeworm or as a hedge. It tolerates pruning well and slow growth reduces the need for it. It is enough to cut the plant 2 times a year.
You can grow a plant from seeds or vegetatively. Sowing seeds is usually used when creating a hedge. This process takes a lot of time – from 3 to 5 years. Seeds are planted in groups at a distance of 50 cm. After that, the soil is watered abundantly. Ephedra is not picky about the composition of the soil. It can be grown in a variety of soils:

- clayey and loamy.
Thuja “Western Columna” can tolerate short-term drought and stagnant moisture. For its cultivation, it is enough to provide a light and loose topsoil. The plant does not like seals on the surface. Mature trees tolerate winter, snowfall and wind. Young seedlings must be covered for the winter. When transplanting seedlings, it is important to ensure the depth of the planting pit of at least 80 m. The distance between them should be 1-1,5 m. Thuja takes root well. She does not need fertilizing and mulching. It is resistant to fungi and insects. For its growth, it is enough to provide good lighting. You can plant a tree in partial shade. It cannot stand the complete absence of the sun.
Thuja is prized by landscape designers for its picky character and decorative properties. It takes any shape and size.
