Start COVID-19 vaccine Frequently asked questions Where can I get vaccinated? Check if you can get vaccinated

On Wednesday, April 7, the EMA announced that blood clots are a very rare side effect of the AstraZeneki vaccine. Thus, the stage of guesswork and suspicion ended. The moment of risk calculation has come. According to the EMA, the benefits of receiving the vaccine outweigh the risks. Dr. Paweł Grzesiowski is of a similar opinion.

  1. In recent weeks, the AstraZeneki vaccine has aroused strong emotions not only in Poland, but also in other countries where the preparation has been approved for use.
  2. Some countries around the world, including Denmark and Norway, have decided to temporarily suspend the administration of AstraZeneki due to reports of thrombosis
  3. The EMA then issued a message that there was no evidence of a link between the vaccine and thrombosis. On April 7, we learned that the suspicions were confirmed
  4. Thrombosis may occur within two weeks of the first dose of the vaccine. It is more common in women before 60 years of age.

AstraZeneca vaccine. Dr. Grzesiowski: vaccinations should not be withheld

On April 7, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) announced that AstraZeneki could cause thrombosis, but the risk is very low and there have been few cases of serious complications so far.

People who received Vaxzevria (formerly COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca) have had cases of unusual blood clots with low platelet counts, the press release said.

However, EMA has previously stressed that AstraZeneki’s benefits outweigh its potential risks. The same opinion is shared by Dr. Paweł Grzesiowski, a specialist in the field of immunology and infection therapy.

«According to EMA: there is an epidemiological link between AstraZeneca and the extremely rare cases of thrombosis, the mechanism and the risk factors are unknown. Further research ongoing. Vaccination should not be withheld. It is necessary to establish in Poland the rules of vaccination in people under 60 years of age »- we read on the doctor’s Twitter.

Dr. Grzesiowski also published information on the group that experienced thrombosis most frequently after receiving the AstraZeneki vaccine.

“Most of the cases of thrombosis were in people under 60, mostly women (but it could be an artifact), not related to hormonal drugs (but little data). The thrombotic reaction occurs 5-16 days after the first dose, resembles immunological thrombocytopenia after the administration of heparin (HIT) »- we read in the entry.

AstraZeneca vaccine. Thrombosis as a result of multiple drug administration

Dr. Paweł Grzesiowski drew attention to the important fact concerning the occurrence of thrombosis after administration of the AstraZeneki vaccine. The risk of this dangerous side effect is much lower than with other popular drugsincluding, for example, birth control pills.

«Thrombosis rate = approx. 1-2 cases / 100 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine, thrombosis occurs 100 times more often after administration of heparin, and after oral contraception 500 times more often (5/1000 / year), which does not mean that we should underestimate the side effects, but it is worth assessing the proportions »- writes Dr. Grzesiowski.

And indeed, if you look at the leaflets attached to the packaging, among others birth control pills, you will notice that thrombosis is mentioned there as a possible side effect of the drug. The information about the possible occurrence of thrombosis, however, is not a reason to withdraw these drugs, and most women choose to use the tablets despite the potential risk.

Not only hormonal contraceptives can cause thrombosis. This side effect can also be caused by Dr. Grzesiowski, heparin (component of anticoagulants). Thrombosis is also listed, inter alia, in the leaflet Metypred (a drug with immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory properties) or Raloxifene (used in the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women).
